Bardenas Reales 2026, there and back again

Day 4. 312 miles

Having left at 7.30 the first 60 miles to Bergerac were a bit boring, but after that it got a bit better. Nicer roads, better scenery.

Some villages could have been prevented… :joy:

More nice riding until suddenly the Pyrenees came into view!

After that the riding was brilliant. The ride up to the summit of the col du pourtalet was just amazing.

Then riding into Spain to Jaca, where I also stayed with @Wessa some years back. Treated myself to a beer…

And had some lovely squid for dinner…

Soo, today was the day - would the aim be reached?
I set off early, into nice scenery.

Then on to the main event, the goal of this journey, the Bardenas Reales.

The start.

And then - more gravel tracks. I started off doing 20 mph, a bit taken aback. Within 15 minutes I was doing 45 mph, overtaking cars and buses. The confidence this bike inspires is just awe inspiring.

Some images…

The land (moon?) scape was just beyond imagination. What a privilege to see and be here.

After 30 miles off road I was pretty tired (37C too), so I legged it to my hotel in Lleda.

Fantastic day.

Wow that desert scape looks fantastic. Mind 37c is definitely on the hot side to be on a bike. How did the bike cope with the temperatures, I guess the fans were working overtime.

Yes you earnt your beer that day fellah! Prob too late but if you’re having another night in Lleida there is a bar next to the hilltop cathedral with good views over the city, great at night when it’s lit up
When we drive to Zaragoza there’s a stretch like that where it feels like you’re on Mars. Made a lot of spaghetti westerns there, although strictly speaking maybe they should have been paella westerns…:slightly_smiling_face:

day 6, 115 miles

A nice start of the day, nice riding.

Then it got a bit tricky - I’d asked Tomtom for an exciting route, but more gravel I hadn’t counted on. Fine though.

Stopped for this photo, all good.

Then, as I wanted to ride off, lost my footing, left foot slipped, and I dropped it…

No way I’d get it back up on my own. After 1,5 hours of ringing services I knew they were useless. Fortunately I then recalled I’d seen some cars about a mile back. Walked there in 37C and discovered there was a pig farm, people there surely? After 15 minutes of shouting ( all gates were shut) a chap came out. I said bon dia and showed him the photo of bike down, and said impossible for me to lift on my own. Whithin 10 minutes bike was upright, and he stayed with me until all panniers were back on. Then said I should ride into town (big word) to the bar and recuperate… Good man, would not take any money either.

On I went, route cut short as I was a bit knackered by now.

Got to my hotel (@Wessa will know it), and was offered a beer as I arrived on a bike.

Next a nice dinner and off to bed…

Yes I remember it well, a very nice hotel.

Pity about you dropping the bike I can certainly relate to that. Fortunately you didn’t hurt yourself, unlike my event.
Was there any significant damage?

A slight scuff on the left pannier. The crash bars did their job, and will clean up nicely.

Glad everything is ok Wim. We all know the feeling

Glad bike is OK. And here was me thinking that those gravel tracks on the previous day’s ride didn’t look too bad and I might try a few miles there on my bike if I end up that way in search of good weather…

The riding itself wasn’t the issue - I just lost my footing setting off…

Very easy done Wim.

Now that it’s all safely locked in history, with no significant consequences… this event will always add great colour to your stories and recollections of biking to your mates (us etc) glad you’re ok to tell the tale. So raise a glass of the cool looking beer in our direction tonight… :clinking_beer_mugs::grin:

Did much the same in the Pyrenees shortly before meeting you in the Dolomites (think SWMBO displayed the bruises?).

BUT didn’t take a photo, so it never really happened!

Thankful you didn’t do a Zarco and get your leg trapped under there. :+1::+1:

Yup, I remember seeing those bruises… :open_mouth:

Must be mistaken, didn’t happen. :innocent::shushing_face::wink:

Day 7, 120 miles

Last night I met two Americans who are touring Spain on rentals. Having had a meal together we decided to do a ride-out today.
Not many pictures as these guys don’t stop! :joy:

Filling our water bottles…

Beer stop (I don’t usually do that but we were sat long enough).

And back at base for some more…

Finished the day with a nice meal.

Day 8, 172 miles

Had my breakfast, settled up the beers, said goodbye to Sean and Dave and off I went. First in and out of Andorra. Just before getting into France:

A bit further on…

Then some passes - pretty challenging, this one.

After that it was all easy to my destination near Carcassonne.
