Is there a thread on here discussing helmets with speakers/comms systems??? I couldn’t see what I was after? I don’t want to use ear buds… what do you use???
We’re using Shoei GT2 helmets with the dedicated Sena comms, which is speakers next to your ears and a mic in the chin section. It’s a neat installation with buttons on the left side that don’t stick out. But it ain’t cheap and when time comes for a new lid your likely binning the comms too.
Sena or Cardo are the top players and not much to chose between them. We’ve used Cardo universal fit in the past and just as good imo. The only down side of the universal external fit units is the extra bulk and sometimes I noticed it touching my shoulder. But obviously can transfer them over to a new lid when needed.
I only use comms to connect to the satnav and for bike to bike with swmbo. As my phone is also connected to the satnav I can use it to get swmbo if we get out of range for Bluetooth (but block all other calls while riding). I tried music also loaded on the satnav but found it distracting, so only ever used it if spending a few hours on motorways.
I don’t use any intercom, but madame likes to listen to music during our trips.
I installed a Cardo Freecom in her LS2 helmet. Speakers are double side taped into the helmet below the foam, where holes are.
The control is taped on the side of the helmet.
I took the JBL optional speakers, and she is really happy with the sound. We dont use it as intercom, but the Cardi comes with 2 mics, one on a flexible shaft, one to be taped into the helmet (full face).
If I’d go for an intercom, my HJC 71 helmet is ready for their system with pre determined places to integrate properly. Neater than a add on system. But I like to keep things simple and don’t want anyone to talk to me as I ride.
Mine’s a Shoei Neotec 3 with integrated Sena comms. Very neat, but like Colin said, not cheap.
I use cardo in my helmet. I use it for satnav instructions and to listen to music. I usually stop to make phone calls, but sometimes do take calls on the move depending on traffic conditions.
That model comes with the built in string, you just need to supply your own paper cups.
Tin cans give better sound quality.
