Being a bit slow, I realised later rather than sooner that the replacement glass may not work. I’d have to remove the cracked mirror to tighten the screws behind (assuming that’s how they’re made). It says the cut-to-size replacement stuff sticks over the old mirror but perhaps it can be glued in. Can’t tell without seeing it first hand.
I’ve got nothing to lose now so I can at least find out how they’re put together.

I took a run over to Youles in Manchester today to inquire about an OEM replacement. “I only need the actual mirror part replacing, as a repair,” I said, hopefully. No chance. You have to buy the whole assembly.
My vague protestations at this wastefulness turned to mild irritation when Nice Kim of the parts counter also stated, flat out, that the mirror can’t be tightened on the ball joint. What sort of shoddy engineering is that?! I will check for myself, just to be sure.
And the price of the mirror assembly? £129. Even worse, the right one is too loose as well, so they want over 250 quid, and these things are known to work loose on occasion! Should I set up a standing order to Triumph for my regular replacements every few years. Perhaps a salary sacrifice scheme would be workable? God help me if I ever need to replace a headlight - I’ll have to remortgage the house!

They look different to the ones on my bike. I’m always dubious about buying stuff like that from eBay. Just because it has a Triumph sticker doesn’t mean it’s an original part.
In further news about the current pair, I’ve picked out the bits of broken mirror. They’re stuck in with a quite tenacious sticky pad but underneath that…
Well would you look at that. Three screws that tighten the mirror on the ball joint. 
This must be fixable. All I need is a piece of glass the right size and shape and some sort of sticky stuff to keep it glued in place.

Or a piece of perspex that’s easy to cut and file yourself to the correct size, then some of that stick on reflective stuff for mirror repair mentioned earlier.

Ah yes. That’s an idea.
Agreed, but equally there’s every chance China supply Triumph OE mirrors, sadly.
(Not that I’d risk that route for any critical parts)

You could use a piece of cardboard to make a template and try a glass shop to see if they can cut a mirror for you. Just a thought.
That sounds like a sensible plan. I’ll look in to it.
