Looks like no one has any better idea than me about these, so they’re off to the recycling centre this afternoon.
Those stands are scratch made for a particular job. Might have been for lifting/steadying a lintel or some such.
I’d find a use for them if they were in my yard. 
Nail a scaffolding plank on for a handy shelf.
You’re probably right about what they were used for, something along those lines, anyway. But now they are on their way to be turned in to something else.
