I know a few of you are Speed Triple Riders… and let’s face it, not ALL of you are in the first flush of youth
So how do you get on with the Speedy’s position? Bad backs anyone? Anyone had to put grifter bars on to increase comfort? Or is it just well sorted out of the box? Any particular year/model needing tweaking?
I’ve got a bad back, but get along with my 2005 just fine for day trips (150 mile-ish). It’s just the long hauls on it I can’t cope with anymore… And even then it’s wrists rather than back.
Still riding mine (std. bars) at 72 years young and my back isn’t great. SWMBO always laughs at my attempts at getting my socks on in the morning.
Admittedly my S1000XR is more comfy for longer rides, but the Speed Triple is nowhere near as extreme as a sports bike. Still happily do a 100ml ride on the Triple, but double that on the BM.
Edit. Agree with Wim, the wrists are first to tire, but mainly if riding bumpy nadgery roads (Ohlins is quite firm), ok on smooth fast roads.
I fitted 20mm risers (just big washers) to SWMBO’s STREET Triple at her request, which is about the limit without going to a longer brake line and wiring. Never felt the need on mine. Both are 2015 “R” versions.
As I’ve said before, always a big grin every time I ride the Speed3, the BM - just a smile.
Edit. IMO 2015 is the sweet spot year for the Speed Triple (admit I’m biased), last of the 1050’s before they added too much electronics (modes etc) to complicate home maintenance. And previous gearbox/clutch issues fully sorted by then, mine’s still better than my 10 yrs newer quickshifting BM.
Rode mine up to Assen a couple of years ago, no aches or pains at all . Neck muscles were complaining as you are sitting in the draught but that’s the joys of any naked bike .
The RS is a bit harsh but I think you could probably tune it out to a degree but the way it handles, as it is, has stopped me fiddling with it .
