Me trying one out for size at Haynes Motor Museum… and an Isetta the same as the one I had at school!!
The strange thing is that ( as always…!) Electrification is really not new. Neither are Hybrids… Some established names had a go at them back in the early 1900’s and then moved onto other means of propulsion…!
Still going to have the stress of finding a “charge point”, but interesting…
(at least it will make the right kind of noises )
If we were serious about Climate Control.
We would, (especially in the UK, cause we don’t make cars), announce the 10 year deadline for the end of all private cars.
10 years to arrange easier commutes, and set up public transport infra structures.
If this is universal and happened to everyone we would get used to the new system extremely quickly.
Bus times would speed up hugely, and transportation costs and times would drop.
Accidents would nearly disappear.
The pace of life would slow.
Noise pollution and air pollution reduce.
Climate targets reached and surpassed.
City centres could give over car parking spaces to Parks and land- scaping.
And kiss goodbye to personal freedom.
Or, find another way to measure “Personal Freedoms”.
Perhaps, campaigning for Direct Democracy?
The problem is “We” wouldn’t make the slightest difference because the UK as a whole emits around 1% of the world’s co2 output, while China and the USA between them emit over 40% followed by India, Russia and Japan.
How good would it feel though?
Whilst in theory that sounds good; it would still be the more advantaged and / or vocal element of the population that had the say in reality I think. There are a lot of very dangerous characters who have considerable influence. Vulnerable and marginalised groups would not have much influence due to various factors. Having said that, I have absolutely no idea what “the answer” would be…
Ironically China is still using coal fired power stations to generate electricity to allow their citizens to charge their green cars…! And will be for many decades to come.
Take a walk in Beijing in February - the coal fumes are palpable.
Just me, but not good at all to have my freedom curtailed while the countries that are far more responsible for getting us in this climate mess carry on as normal. It might be the moral high ground but I don’t think it would get us anywhere, nor do I think it would be practicle as we live in a modern society that would need regular public transport running 24/7/365 to all parts of the country which might be workable in the big cities, but not elsewhere?
Terrible, I’d have to emigrate to USA and vote for Donald!
(You chose well with your “Silent Running” avatar

l think that ship sailed a while ago…
My X3 was recalled for something to do with the EGR. The courtesy car was a brand new i4. They didn’t have the necessary part for replacement on the X3 so I had the i4 for a whole month. That convinced me never ever to buy an EV.
Funnily enough I have a Dirty Diesel X1 that has to go in for the same problem….!
Not been offered a courtesy car yet … let’s see what they come up with…!
From a user point of view the BMW diesel engine is unbeatable. Very very efficient and great to drive .
Well the government did tell us all to buy diesels…
It was a few years ago mind.
Diesels produce less CO2 than petrols, hence the previous advice to buy diesel. The problem turned out to be diesel particulates which were a problem in urban environments. However, modern diesels (built in the past 10 years) are fitted with particulate filters that largely overcome this problem.
The irony is, buying a used diesel (less than 10 years old) is probably the most environmentally friendly thing you can do (apart from giving up driving of course!).
Yep, mine’s ULEZ compliant, (DPF to catch the particulates, adblue to minimise NOx). Yet the eco warriors hate me 'cos it’s an SUV!!
