No, I won’t name names - it was more meant as a general lesson about being cautious when dealing with businesses particularly in the current motorcycle climate where a number of high profile dealerships seem to have closed suddenly recently.

Always pay any deposit with a credit card as that gives you cover for the whole purchase under current legislation far and above any total purchase price of a bike (I think it’s £85k but not 100% sure)

That’s good advice and something I always do. I think the upper limit is £30k though, but more than enough to cover virtually all bikes.

Added:
The total purchase value has to be between £100 and £30,000. The deposit value can be any amount. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

Thanks for clarifying the upper limit, I must have been thinking about the investment protection limit for savings accounts etc. As you say £30k covers most bikes and I certainly won’t be buying one over that value, I didn’t buy another GS, partly because a new one was well over £20k which to me is silly money.

£20k also seems to be a limit for getting sensible insurance quotes these days (but that’s a separate topic  )

They were removing the Triumphs from Deeside today. No buyer took dealership over.

I’m guessing Bill Smiths will be watching proceedings closely and would not be surprised if they end up with the triumph franchise again.

From what ive heard Mark burnt his bridges and sunk his boats with Triumph. He would not comply with their boutique requirements.

Yes I have heard similar stories. Who knows though Triumph will be looking for an outlet in the Cheshire area, and Mark and Bill Smiths are a really good outfit. I guess time will tell.

Manufacturers need to keep a closer eye on the state of the market. If dealers are closing they may have to rethink how they sell and service their products. Difficult times.
