Painting a helmet, tank and stuff with craquelure (now available at B&Q)

That top pic has a kind of SoCal bikini vibe about it… (in a cool way)

I like the tank, it looks classy although prefer the purer black and white look.

The tank has been boxed and put back on the shelf as I forgot to key the intercoat before the craquelure base coat. The top coat then pulled the base coat into lumps of goo. It’s a bit frustrating when things go sideways after hours of work but as long as I can keep from the hammer drawer it should be a good lesson.
So having another go on a spare derby cover

and just before the craquelure base coat

diving in, wish me luck as that hammer drawer isn’t too far away :slightly_smiling_face:

I wasn’t aware of the significance of the initials FW and the year 1813 - I have now educated myself and found out 1813 was the year Frederick William III established the Iron Cross Award… :see_no_evil_monkey:

Yes, these were awarded to some at Waterloo. They are quite expensive if you want a real one. There’s a few models - they come in first and second class - 1813, 1870, 1914, 1939, 1957 (for those to replace the swastika award) and recently the 2008 version.

I have a few of the WW1 awards

I think I’ve figured out that I hadn’t allowed enough time for the base coat to dry as it remains tacky even when dry.
It looks ok once the cracks are highlighted but probably better on a lighter base with darkened cracks.

miles better than the hobby crackle stuff as it properly looks old.

I’ll now see if the 2k clear coat goes on ok.

I think I’ll try thinning it down and try the air brush application again. It’ll lose the brush marks if I can get that to work. Fun fun fun… :slightly_smiling_face:

2 pack went on pretty well. As usual it removed some of the mistyness from the underlaying layers.
Applied two pretty thick coats.

Difficult to photo due to reflections but looks ok. I’ll polish it tomorrow and stick it on the bike.
