Barry Sheene is the only bike racer we’ve had who became a true household name in Britain. Famous for his Daytona 200 crash, his cheeky personality, playboy lifestyle and, or course, those classic Brut adverts,

His career ran from 1968 to 1984., after which he retired to Australia. Barry won two consecutive FIM World Championships, in 1975 and 1976, on a Suzuki RG500. He is the last British winner of the premier class.

In 2002, Sheene was diganosed with cancer. He died on this day the following year aged just 52. But what a life…
