Geoff Duke won his third 500cc championship in 1954, riding a Gilera.
The scoring system was different to the modern method of accumulating points in each round. Back then, points were awarded for a riders’s five best race results.
The 1954 series consisted of nine races (France, IoM TT, Ulster, Belgium, Dutch TT, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Spain). Duke won five consecutive rounds beginning with Spa Framcorchamps, which meant he had maximum points and couldn’t be beaten with one more race to go.
Geoff ended the season with twice as many points as his nearest rival, Ray Amm, on the Norton.
