The Nürburgring motor-racing circuit in Germany held its first race meeting in 1927. It was a motorcycle race won by German Toni Ulmen on an English 350cc Velocette.
Work began on the track in the autumn of 1925 with almost 3000 people involved in its construction, which took less than two years.
The original historic circuit originally consisted of the 14.2-mile North Loop (Nordschleife) and the 4.8-mile South Loop (Südschleife). Most races ran on a 17.6-mile circuit called the Gesamtstrecke, or Whole Course.
