Yamaha unveiled their answer to Suzuki’s GSX-R1000, the 130 BHP FZR1000 Genesis, at the IFMA motorcycle show in Cologne, Germany in 1986. The FZR1000, developed from the FZ750, was created to build upon the successful reputation established by its predecessors in the super sport category; the RD350 and RD500 models.
The FZ hailed a major change of engine type being used by Yamaha, the company switching to four-stroke power plants for its new generation of high-performance superbikes and ditching the previous two-stroke units. It also featured the aluminium ‘Deltabox’ frame, derived from Yamaha’s racing machines, for the first time on a larger capacity model..
The FZR was replaced by the YZF1000R Thunderace in 1995.
It’s funny, but if anyone talks about a modern motorbike (without being specific) this is the bike that pops into my head most of the time ! at 39 years old, surely must be a compliment?
Had 1 FZR 750, and 2 FZX. Was close to buy a 1000 FZR at the time. Those Genesis 20 valves engines were really nice. Easy, reliable, powerful. But they never gained the status of GSXR.
I had a Harris GPz1100 when the FZR came out and my mate bought one. What a revelation, everything worked properly, you didn’t need forearms like Popeye to open the throttle
Not long after my first go on his I bought a GSXR1100😀
My first 1000 was the FZR, Loved it.
Build quality wasn’t great and everything wore out around 10000 miles, head races, shock, head bearings, forks…..
So that was when I sold it..!
This was Titzup tours infancy, when a trip to Assen was done with a bungeed on hold-all….!
