2 March - A New Sport Comes in Exeter

Back in 1929, it was a Saturday in Exeter, UK and the rugby spectators had just watched Devon play Glucester in a county match. After the final whistle was blown on this particular day, the crowd didn’t drift away as they usually would. They waited to see a demonstration of a new sport that was starting in the town the following weekend - speedway had arrived!

History doesn’t record what they made of Freddie Hore and Bert “The Baby Cyclone” Spencer roaring around the Country Ground to demonstrate the new sport that had only reached these shore a year earlier and that would become a fixture in the town from the following weekend and endure for the next 76 years.
