Walter Goerke was a pioneer of motorcycle racing, an enthusiast and one of the first professionals. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was a founding member of the New York Motorcycle Club at the turn of the 20th century and later became a charter member of Brooklyn’s Invincible M.C.
Walter set a new world record this day in 1909, riding his 7hp Indian 69 miles in one hour on the Daytona beach. The record was accomplished in a time of 58 minutes, 25 4/5 seconds.
One not being enough, he also set a world record in the '1 Kilometer Race" with a time of 27 4/5 seconds on the same day.
