28 August - The 'First' Motorcycle is Patented

In 1885, what is often referred to as the first motorcycle was patented by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. The Daimler Reitwagen is rather controversial - some claim it’s not the actually the first motorcycle. It all depends how you define what a motorcycle actually is.

The Reitwagen usually claims the crown because it has an internal combustion engine, as opposed to other ‘motorcycles’ such as the Motrice Pia, the Michaux-Perreaux steam velocipede and the Roper steam velocipede.

Motrice Pia (1894)

Michaux-Perreaux steam velocipede (~1867-1871)

Roper steam velocipede (~1869)

Of course, if a motorcycle is defined as having an ICE to power it, where does that leave the electric ones…
