29 April -The Henderson Special KL

Henderson Motorcycle Co was an American manufacturer of in-line 4-cylinder motorcycles from 1912 until 1931.

In 1930, the Henderson “Special” KL was demonstrated on a new, smooth concrete Illinois highway. Joe Petrali achieved 116.12 mph and 109.09 mph on two recorded runs, averaging 112.61 mph. It had higher compression compared to the standard K, two-ring pistons and an enlarged 1.25 inch (32 mm) carburetor. The engine produced 45 hp at 4,500 rpm and was remarkably flexible in top gear, pulling smoothly from 8 to 110 mph.

They appear to have chain drive on the right and another cogged wheel on the left??? I was thinking it was so you could turn the wheel around to get different gearing but the engine sounds like it it more than torquey enough (never mind the faff) and the teeth seem to be a different pitch anyway?

Edit - the cog on the left of the bike is a speedo drive.
