31 May - Indian Wins at Brooklands

The defunct track at Brooklands was the world’s first ground up, purpose-built motor racing circuit. In 1909, two years after it opened, Guy Lee Evans turned up on his 5hp Indian to have a crack at the Metropolitan Motor Cycle Handicap (up to 1,000 cc over 8.5 miles).

Indian were at the forefront of motorcycle technology at that time and had just opened a depot in England for sales to Great Britiain and Europe.

Guy raced to victory, and made history with his Indian as the first American motorcycle to win at Brooklands. His nearest rival, Will Cook, came second despite having 2 extra horses with his 7 hp, Peugot powered NLG 944cc V-twin.
