5 August - Indian Restarts Production at Spirit Lake

Indian motorcycles has, not unlike other manufacturers we know and love, had its ups and downs in the decades since it all began.

From being the biggest manufacturer of motorcycles in the world in the 1910’s, Indian’s were being made in limited numbers by the time Polaris Industries, the off-road and leisure vehicle maker and parent company of Victory Motorcycles, bought the old marque.

Indian’s star was on the ascendant again on this day in 2011 as production began in the new factory at Spirit Lake in Iowa. Nineteen months later thet unveiled their new 1,820 cc “Thunder Stroke” engine and began to sell their newly designed motorcycles based on it in the summer.
