5 January - Wilhelm Herz dies

Wilhelm Herz shuffled off the planet aged 85 in 1998 having become the first man to break the 200mph barrier on a motorcycle in 1956. Wilhelm was a racer and the long-time manager on the Hockenheimring racing circuit from 1954 to 1992.
He and fellow German riders courted controversy at the Isle of Man TT on the eve of war in 1939 by displaying swastikas on their leathers and being accompanied by a senior Nazi party official.
