A day in the Peak District

Yesterday I had an appointment at a local hospital at 6pm so thought I’d set off at 9am, so I could go on a 200 mile detour via the Peak District

Trip up there took two hours going via a mix of fast sweeping back roads and some gnarly single-tracks with tractors and cyclists to get stuck behind or dodge. I arrived at the The Old Smithy Monyash just after 11 and as I suspected I wasn’t the only one with such plans.

There wasn’t a queue so I quickly got my order in for a warming coffee and bacon butty then proceeded to plan the next part of my route whilst sitting in the sun. I had timed things just right, because over the next 15 minutes or so there was a steady stream of new bikes and the queue to order got to a dozen people long and there was no parking space on the front or side streets.

After my rest, I set off on the second leg, taking in Longstone Edge.

The up towards Hathersage to do a loop over the hill from Eyam northwards then west through Abney coming south again via Millers Dale towards Lognor but veering off west before getting there.

The route I’d planned across the moors was blocked by a closed road so I ended up detouring further south to near Leek before getting up onto the moors above The Roaches.

My destination was The Tea Junction at Hulme End where I had cake and lemonade. :face_savoring_food:

I decided to let satnav find the route home, it’s ‘winding route’ setting picked a lot of my usual roads but some new ones too. The start was to head up towards Dovedale.

Then cross country by fields and villages.

As it looked like I’d be an hour early for my appointment I took time to pull into some woods and sit on a tree stump to eat a prepacked sandwich whilst admiring my bike

I extended my route another 20 miles to eat up more time riding through countryside with the setting sun to get to my hospital appointment.

As lovely as it looks incidentally, a couple of hundred years ago that area was littered with lead mines. Still bits of building and spoil heaps in that copse, and a bit further on is Deep Rake, an opencast mine up to 90 feet deep in parts. Careful where you walk!
