A day trip further afield

Today’s forecast for the Peak District was sunny intervals all day and 8°C in the afternoon so thought a visit was called for  In a effort to find some ‘new’ roads I decided to break with my normal habit of taking the cross country route there and instead put in an hour of motorway so I could get further up to the north part which I rarely get to.

The motorway was under clouds as forecast but when I left it to head west onto the moors and hills I wasn’t met with the promised sun but mist instead.

This was still nice to ride though as these roads were new to me. Well, they were kind of familiar due to seeing them often on a YouTube channel (Richy Vida).

One of the waypoints I programmed my satnav with turned out to be on a closed road, I ignored the Closed sign to have a look but came up against barricades across the road. I’ve seen these at other places in The Peaks where the road is badly damaged and has been permanently closed due to lack of money to fix it :frowning:

By now the mist was lifting, and once I had detoured through the Chatsworth estate and up to Hathersage the sun was occasionally peeking through. So when I got to Stanage Edge around 11:30 I thought it was a good place to take a half hour rest to eat my pasty and look at the views.

When I set off again at noon it was proper sunny. :sunglasses:

I decided to make the most of the day any went further north to ride Mortimer Road (AKA the Strines road) and around the reservoirs to the north west of Sheffield.

After filling up with petrol it was time to plot a route home which took me south though Miller’s Dale, Monyash and Ashbourne. I couldn’t ride through Monyash though without stopping for refreshments

This leg of the trip was under grey clouds again unfortunately, but once south of Ashbourne it brightened up quite a bit and the last 90 minutes to home on familiar roads was very pleasant.

That looks like a gorgeous trip out; especially venturing onto new roads. That cake must have been a bit tasty too…

Done those roads a fair bit. Next time look for the Barrel lnn at Bretton, highest pub in Derbyshire. Decent enough view up there. Walked the edges too, was on Stanage last week and it was Baltic…been up Win Hill too, the one in pic 2. Steep climb!

You were only 10 minutes from my house. Should’ve popped in for a brew.

As long as your cat wasn’t roaming free…could be a risky venture for a mouse, otherwise…

Been by that way a couple of times on my bike, it does have a nice view, but that route is rather spoilt for me now by having one of those blocked off broken roads so you can’t make a loop by going through Abney. (Well, you can go down the hill to the main road and back up again a bit later, but that spoils the feel of riding through ‘wilderness’).

About 15 years ago, before car and between bikes, we walked over Win Hill from Hope train station on the way to staying at the Yorkshire Bridge Inn. We’ve also walked some of the edge (possibly on the same trip).
