Today’s forecast for the Peak District was sunny intervals all day and 8°C in the afternoon so thought a visit was called for In a effort to find some ‘new’ roads I decided to break with my normal habit of taking the cross country route there and instead put in an hour of motorway so I could get further up to the north part which I rarely get to.
The motorway was under clouds as forecast but when I left it to head west onto the moors and hills I wasn’t met with the promised sun but mist instead.
This was still nice to ride though as these roads were new to me. Well, they were kind of familiar due to seeing them often on a YouTube channel (Richy Vida).
One of the waypoints I programmed my satnav with turned out to be on a closed road, I ignored the Closed sign to have a look but came up against barricades across the road. I’ve seen these at other places in The Peaks where the road is badly damaged and has been permanently closed due to lack of money to fix it
By now the mist was lifting, and once I had detoured through the Chatsworth estate and up to Hathersage the sun was occasionally peeking through. So when I got to Stanage Edge around 11:30 I thought it was a good place to take a half hour rest to eat my pasty and look at the views.
When I set off again at noon it was proper sunny.
I decided to make the most of the day any went further north to ride Mortimer Road (AKA the Strines road) and around the reservoirs to the north west of Sheffield.
After filling up with petrol it was time to plot a route home which took me south though Miller’s Dale, Monyash and Ashbourne. I couldn’t ride through Monyash though without stopping for refreshments
This leg of the trip was under grey clouds again unfortunately, but once south of Ashbourne it brightened up quite a bit and the last 90 minutes to home on familiar roads was very pleasant.
