I had a chat some time ago with Noonans of Mayfair about selling awards, medals etc. and they told me that this is the very reason not to leave family stuff to a museum.
Eventually it will be sold off, either when the museum closes or when they need money to keep going. So his advice was to sell your heirlooms to someone who is going to love and cherish it - whether it’s an A35 van or your Granddad’s Military Cross.
Edit: but, in the mean time, I’ll be seeing what’s available
