Automatic bike?

Since years I regularly face left hand tendinitis, maybe also the carpal tunnel starts to enter the painful dance.
Everytime I ride for a day, it’s getting difficult. My wife would also like to travel on the bike again. So.. I’m starting to look at those DCT bikes. Not many choice, the only suitable bike seems to be the Honda NT 1100. The process to let down my ST 1050 will be long, So I need to think about every solution.

Perhaps the Yamaha Y-AMT is an option? It’d be hard to part with your beloved ST 1050 though…

I don’t know if they make one for your specific bike, but there will be a way to retro fit!

didn’t knew about that Y-AMT. I had a look at the Tracer. So far I looked toward Honda because they have the DCT technology for 15 years.
I’ll check all options. The last thing I’ll try on the ST will be to install a longer clutch arm on the pivot to reduce the force needed (and unfortunately the clutch course too).

Interesting technology. Unfortunately not for me. It only works as you stop, not on gear change.

I’ve also looked at the aftermarket shifters (Healtech). On old machines like mine, it works only to gear up. Down shifting would need a bleeper, and on my ST it’s still a cable throttle, so not sure it will work.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is no fun, I 've had both my wrists done.

There’s also the DCT Gold Wing which could be a bargain used. B*W are also bringing out their own version (ASA) which is currently only available on the 1300 GS & GSA but now doubt it’ll end up in the new 1300 RT, RS and R when they come out but it seems to be getting mixed reviews at the mo from the Beta testers where as the Honda system has been out for some time now so any early adopter software glitches have likely been solved by now

Rendez-vous on the 27th of May to try a NT1100.
Following my email, the Honda dealer called me back, quick chat about the bikes. He asked me about my current motorcycle, and as I mentioned the ST1050 the guy told me he had 3 of them and love that particular model

Have you seen this?

seen a couple, none of the reviews say bad things about the bike. The only thing that comes back in a regular basis id the complexity of the left control panel.

Saturday we’ve done with madame ah afternoon on the ST 1050. 3 twisty mountains around there, lots of hairpins, 2 on the bike, for a total of 150 very enjoyable kilometers. Even with a minimum course clutch travel it’s still painful for my hand. The pillion confort is ok, but not for a 3 days travel. So despite I love my ST, we are now 2 looking forward the test drive at the end of the month…

Soooo.. This morning, Babeth and I jumped on the Triumph to go at the nearest Honda dealer to try a NT1100 DCT.
That bike is quite big.. I’ve been there with in mind to tick the box “I tried it and it’s not for me”.
So. I climb on the bike and oh surprise, my feet can reach the floor
Babeth climb on the pillion, and there we go. Where we live, mountain road are everywhere. We’ve directly climbed hairpins 2 on the bike. That Honda is not exciting, but it’s so easy to ride. It’s very confortable, brakes are very good, and that DCT gearbox is brilliant.
The engine can push more than enough.
We signed the bill for a new one, last year model (2024), zero km for a really fair discount.
NBD in a big week :slightly_smiling_face:
Still don’t know if I keep the Triumph. I need to think about. Every ride is a mix of joy and pain.

Got the new bike today. Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde side by side.

The ride from the dealer confirmed the short test we did days ago.
The bike is incredibly easy to ride, very confortable. And the DCT is efficient.
Manual gear change are incredibly quick, a fraction of a second.

That reminds me when I was a young guitar player. In a guitar store, the seller told to another guy in the shop "If you’re a young guitar player, you want to kick a.. on guitar, you play an Ibanez, later as you can properly play, you switch to a Stratocaster.
Riding a Honda seems to be something similar.

The engine running-in needs to be done properly, so yesterday (public holiday in France), we’ve made a 270 km (170 miles) run between France and Switzerland, along Lac Leman.
The bike is fantastic, I learn the DCT how I’d like it behaves (yes the gearbox learns) by using the palet sometime.
Both seats will spend a day with our favorite upholstery shop soon to add an extra 2 cm of Bultex foam on passenger, and for me replace the top foam with also Bultex on 1 cm, and a slight rounding.
Today I have to ride around for some rendez-vous I’ll take the Triumph out to enjoy the grunt of the engine.
