Bike Theft

Not sure if you’ve heard of this type of theft but thought I’d pass this on.

Talking to my mate’s wife yesterday she said an ex colleague of hers has had his bike nicked from his garage in Solihull in the early hours.

He’d been to a biker meet with his son and saw some other “mates” looking at his bike while he was there but thought nothing of it.

It’s likely they put an air tag on it so could track where he lived then turned up later once they knew where it was being stored, ripped the door off his garage and stole his Yamaha Tracer, helmet and mountain bike.

So if you do go to such places it might pay to have a good look over your bike before you leave to make sure you’ve not been tagged too and don’t forget to put your locks on when it’s in your garage to at least try and slow the bastards down

I find it odd that anyone would go to all the trouble of tagging, tracking and later stealing a seven year old Tracer 900. If he owned a nearly new Panigale V4 or something then I’d understand.

It’s probably unlikely that the theft had anything to do with the bike meet.

It’s hard to make assumptions either way about air tags and bike meets… but my bike has 2 locks on it at home, because that’s where it spends the majority of the time

I recently borrowed a courtesy car while mine as in for an MoT. When I got home, about 10-15 minutes up the road, I had a notification on my phone about a tag, which must have been in the car. I believe Apple added this feature to stop people dropping them in to handbags, which is a very creepy thought.

The point being sticking air tags on bikes (or anything) isn’t a particularly good strategy if you’re looking to find and steal it later without the owner waiting for you…or the police.

Interesting. If nothing else, it’s made me feel more aware of security on roller doors. The attached image in that post shows what looks like a roller door on the garage in the background so I’m assuming that’s the actual garage in question. I’ve always thought that roller doors were somewhat more secure than the regular (standard) ‘up and over’ garage door - perhaps that’s not so. I’m likely to be getting two new roller doors on my detached garage in the near future so I’ll be looking into the security aspects and the possibility of integrating some kind of alarm and/or deadlock on the lift mechanism.

Hope the victim gets his bike back and, more importantly, hope the scumbags that took it get their just desserts via some intensely painful and short lived but irrevocably terminal disease.

I had a sectional overhead roller door installed to replace the flimsy up and over door that was there. It will lock up when tampered with. Feels much safer.

I have LiftMaster LM750EVGB roller doors on my garage. Not so much for the security as for the remote control, but they do seem pretty sturdy; I’m not sure what it would take to force one up against the locking mechanism.

There’s a safety cord hanging inside. When pulled, it releases the locking mechanism so the door can be lifted manually. Useful if you lose power to the garage and need to get your car/bike/lawnmower out.

Ahaaaa. I didn’t realise that I should have mentioned when questioned that both my mate’s wife and the bloke who lost his bike are/were serving police officers as I didn’t think I’d have to rely on this on an internet forum  so if they’re convinced it was a targeted theft with their coppers noses (and know things we don’t) that’s good enough for me. If you think about it it does make sense and a biker meet would provide ideal cover and be a bit like a supermarket for an OCG looking to steal a specific bike, they just have to turn up looking like bikers and walk up and down the vast choice to see if what they want is there or not. Neil said why would they nick a Tracer when other more exotic bikes were there? Probably because it was a Tracer they were looking to steal. So looking at it from the other angle why would they pay particular attention to that bike when there was more exotic stuff to look at, if you were a biker you wouldn’t would you, you’d go and look at the rarer more exotic stuff rather than use your time up looking at an old Yamaha.
Saul mentioned the iphone apple tags anti stalking thing, does this also apply to android as you can get them too now and there’s loads of them to choose from on 'tinternet (plus stuff like Monimotos)

I posted it to hopefully help others on here not suffer the same result, be aware and all that

FWIW I’ve heard that sectional up and over doors are more secure than roller shutters so for those thinking of upgrading their garage security that might be worth looking at.

When we had our up and over garage door installed the guy was telling me that the new ones are really secure. So much so when he locked himself out of one it took him over 2.5 hours to break back in and he knows how they operate, that being said he was clearly trying to do it without damaging the door but does prove they are hard to get into

I wouldn’t believe anything a copper said personally. Bent bunch of lying bastards in my experience. Far more interested in self service than public service. :slightly_smiling_face:

I still think your copper friend is suffering from wishful thinking :slightly_smiling_face:

Probably, but don’t tell the wife

People steal cheaper stuff as they go under the radar more and it’ll be up cycled for financial gain not joy ridden for exotic experience. I don’t go to big bike meets at all which is in my favour

Posted this story on a few other platforms just now !!

One thing not mentioned. depends on why they wanted to steal it in the first place, i.e wat they planning on doing with it.

I’ll keep an eye out for the click-throughs. :+1:

This bike theft certainly didn’t go to plan

Oh dear, what a shame.

I know I shed a tear when I read it. Actually that’s a lie …

I do feel sorry for the Audi driver though.
