DJI Osmo action 4, action camera

This isn’t a review of the camera as you’ll see but a review of the initial setup.
I bought one of these based on some pretty good reviews by motorcyclists on youtube. The intention was just to use it to record my own trips on my bikes, no requirements to post to youtube etc, just so that I could relive some journeys. I have been using a cheap action camera but that is starting to have issues.
So I went to set it up and it tells you that you can skip the activation for 5 times. Then the camera will not work anymore until it is activated.
I have an old motorola smartphone running android so went to get the ‘mimo’ app from play store to complete the activation as described in their startup guide. It wasn’t there, reading the manual and some forums it is not on play store but must be sideloaded from the dji website. I didn’t like to do this as android has many warnings about doing it but in the end I was forced to. Turns out it was pointless because my motorola is not supported. (there is a limited number of android smartphones supported).
So it turns out I can’t use this camera because I can’t set it up. DJI’s response is to find somebody who has a supported smartphone and use that to set it up! Great, but what about future firmware updates or factory resets? Same issue again. Unfortunately I had to return it.
It looks like insta360 also have this restriction and their app will not install on my phone so they are out as well.
GoPro do allow manual setup/firmware updates and tell you how to do it in their setup guide. I guess it will be GoPro for me then.
If you are an iphone user you are fine as the dji app is on their app store. Just be aware if you are an android user.

Useful update mate, thanks for posting. I use a VSYSTO camera on my tiger. The app is ok and the cameras are brilliant.
