Mate and I rode up to Dumfries yesterday on little adventure bikes.
Today we left Dumfries heading for tonight’s digs at the Buccleuch Arms in Moffat via a few nice places. First part through Kirkcudbright and up to Sanquar was lovely, few spots of rain but not worth worrying about.
Tried to get onto A740 towards Crawfordjohn but signs were telling of closed road so we backtracked to the Mennock Pass, then from Leadhills to Elanfoot and Moffat.
Great days riding
Some excellent routes there, and you passed close to where I live, between Dalbeattie and Kirkcudbright. D & G roads are great to ride as long as you keep a good lookout for potholes. There are precious few police around, but most of the roads aren’t suitable for speeding anyway.
Yeah some first grade potholes today. Speeding not really an issue on these bikes but was lovely pootling between 40 and 60
Hopefully doing the A708 tomorrow on way home. Looks awesome but sign in Moffat says it’s closed. Some guys in the hotel reckon it’s just a bit of gravel so will give it a whirl
Lovely scenery on the A708, plus the biker-friendly Glen Cafe at the Loch of the Lowes. Watch out for sheep (although I’m sure a Cumbrian will be used to sheep on the road). Turn left at St Mary’s Loch past Megget and Talla Reservoirs to Tweedsmuir and back to Moffat by the A701. Or, of course, not, if the A708 is closed.
The A701 Moffat to Edinburgh via the Devil’s Beef Tub and Tweeddale is a great road, faster and swoopier than the A708, which is often slow and twisty.
Left the Buccleuch Arms heading for Tallla and Megget reservoirs, past St Mary’s Loch then down some B roads to pick up the A7 towards home. The views were awesome, the roads empty and weather was perfect.
What a great trip and thanks to @Dave49 for some route inspiration!
