Hi, running in from Norwich!

Hi, bought my 2nd Triumph yesterday, traded in my 765Moto2 for the 1200RX. It feels very similar ergonomically but obviously with more power.
It wasn’t until I arrived home (55miles) I saw the run in protocol sticker on the tank. I hadn’t ridden it hard back home but certainly hadn’t adhered to <3500rpm.
There seems to be a plethora of running in recommendations depending on make/model of bike but in the case of demo bikes it’s a free for all and they are generally considered a bargain when they are sold.
Any informed opinions on new bike run in proceedure.

Hi and welcome. Just be sensible running it in. There might be a “run in mode” for the rpm 's on the dash? My Tiger 1200 Explorer had.

Yes for sure, previously when I’ve had new bikes I’ve progressively taken it up the rev range short shifting and avoiding the engine labouring.

Hi James. Welcome to the forum! I think you may be the first person here with a 1200RX (cue howls of protest that I haven’t been listening…). Interesting that you moved up from a 765RS. I’d be curious to hear more about your comparative experience of the bikes.

I have no specific or expert advice about running-in other than the obvious about keeping the revs down at the recommended limit and, if this is still a thing, to vary the revs, not just sit on a straight road at a constant speed in the same gear. Either way, I’d be surprised if you’ve done any real damage to a modern engine in just 55 miles.

Great choice of bike. One that I have my eye on….!
I look forward to hearing how you get on with it.

With regard to running in: Just be gentle with it. No prolonged periods at revs above 3500 , short sprints just above that ceiling will do it no harm at all. Labouring it in a to high gear is definitely not advised either.

Thanks for the reassurance/advice. I’ll get some pictures this weekend.
I got the RX from Triumph Ipswich. Salesman was Charlie, young chap, very business like and enthusiastic.
First impressions are …..ergonomics feel just like the moto2, obviously more power and very smooth, handling is light and accurate ( took the B1077 to Norwich).
Looking forward to getting the miles in.

Hi and welcome…. I have nothing to and re engine running in that has not already been said. The only thing I would add is to take it easy on the brakes as they need a little tlc from new.

Welcome in, as a non Trumpet rider what does it say in your owners manual? As others have said in general don’t labour the engine, keep it "happy"within the rev limits imposed for running in and as @Wessa says don’t go mad on the brakes as those need bedding in, as do your tyres. Enjoy your new bike :+1:

So this is the protocol for running it - I’m not worried about strictly adhering to this, I’m just being sympathetic with revs, gears and being smooth.

Your rev counter will probably tell you too - it did on both my Tiger and the mrs. Trident.

Yes there is an option to select ‘running in’ in the shift indicator menu!
