Could anyone tell me how I can write a personal message to a forum member?

Probably the easiest way is to click the person’s avatar to bring up their member card. and use the Message button.

Another option is similar to how you’d use email. On the sidebar there’s a section for messages that has inboxes for you personally and any groups you’ve joined. The screenshot below is what mine looks like. If you click the + symbol it opens up a new message pane, again, much like email works.
