Imatranajot 2026

Sad news from Finland. The IRRC just announced that they have canceled the Imatra races in early July. Only 5.5 months before the event :(.

Background:

The [International Road Racing Championship (IRRC)] 2026 Imatranajo round has been canceled due to the Motor sport Federation (Finland) removing it from the national calendar, invalidating the riders’ licenses for the event. The decision was made by the Motor sport Federation because the International Motor Federation (FIM) has defined racing on temporary street tracks as dangerous and believes that national sports federations should not include these races in their calendars.

The Finnish federation’s decision not to participate in the event meant a lack of support and the invalidation of IRRC driving licenses. The IRRC said they will do nothing in the situation other than cancel the event.

Imatra is a small town of 25,000 inhabitants and the Imatranajot is the largest summer event in the Imatra region. Volunteers are still largely responsible for that. Despite the decisions, the local old motorcycle club is desperately trying to keep the old event alive somehow, and the new ESR series may still be raced there.

It is so sad when long standing events are cancelled.

Since 1962 :woozy face: For example, Giacomo Agostini won there 16 times… a few other winners from history: Jarno Saarinen, Barry Sheene, Angel Nieto, Johnny Cecotto, Randy Mamola, Joey Dunlop etc. Peter Hickman has raced Imatra once, Michael Dunlop twice.

That is quite an impressive roll call!

Let’s hope it’s not a catching trend then… :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:
