Key fob Security

I just read an article on car theft… and it surprised me how easy the keyless fobs are making it for thieves… my suspicion is that motorbikes are heading in that direction too. One of the take away points from this seems to be a Faraday pouch or box to store the key in when away from the vehicle… wasn’t sure if any of you high end bike (or car with keyless ignition) owners were aware???

An example (other faraday kit is available all over the internet)

I actually switch mine off when away from the bike. I’m not entirely sure if that makes a difference?

I use a pouch for my keyless entry on my car. I’ve had for a couple of years now.

Thanks for sharing :+1:

I suppose it would be nice if the car manufacturers came up with a solution to this problem. Too much to ask?

I suppose they could invent a little metal thing with grooves in it that you insert into a hole and turn it to start. Just a thought. Perhaps I could patent the idea.

Just bought a Faraday pouch for the car keys but both bikes are old skool physical keys.

If you don’t want to buy a pouch you can apparently just stick your key fob in the fridge or microwave

I don’t think the fridge will fit but I can probably strap the microwave to the pillion seat. Does it have to be plugged in?

We got one of these, then they can all fit in one

I have a Ford Focus with keyless entry and I just disable it in the car settings.

TBH I don’t know why you would use it, it’s not really a big deal to press a button on the remote

Both of my vans and two of my motorbikes have old fashioned keys, and my third bike has magneto ignition, so not even a key - just a valve lifter and a big long kickstart lever. All work fine, so I don’t think I’m missing anything. Keyless ignition is an expensive answer to a non-existent problem: a retrograde commercial gimmick if you ask me, especially if you need to buy another gadget to make it more secure.

(OK, I’m a grumpy old git and nobody is asking me, but still…) :frowning:

Totally agree @Dave49

My Speedy has keyless ignition and I can see no benefit at all. Still need the key to fill up or remove the seat, and yet another battery to replace every year or so. Pointless!

My Tiger has it, and although I can fill up without using a key, you still need to carry another key in case the battery on the fob runs out. Same for the seat.

The central locking on my 20 year old car has been playing up and yesterday I had to climb in trough the passenger side door. It was only this morning that I thought to try the physical key in the driver’s door, and that opened it  Good to know there is still a physical mechanism and I don’t have to bother with the hassle or trying to fix it, or find someone else to do. Actually, I was just going to leave car unlocked as a fallback, there’s nothing inside to nick.

My car is keyless, with the keycard in my pocket it unlocks when I walk up to it, starts on the button, locks when I walk away, I love it!!

In fact, any other car and I sometimes forget to lock it. We looked at a new VW Polo for my wife once and when the salesman put the key in the door lock she just said “forget it” and walked away…..

Car is insured and garaged overnight, so it’s not something I worry about.

Hi, I thought the same! My 1200RX - which has done very little since I bought it has a keyless fob. TBH I’m indifferent as to whether it’s a good old fashioned key or a modern fob but the theft potential concerns me.

I left my wife my car keys whilst I was away on business, a Volvo with keyless entry.

I got a call to say the keyless locking wasn’t working properly………” every time I walk up to it it’s unlocked, I know I pressed the lock symbol on the remote”

Have you got the keys in your pocket when you try the locks I suggested……

“Yes of course I have……..”

Then the moment of realisation, click, phone went silent. The keyless locking penny dropped….and she’s not blonde..!
