Well, not lazing exactly, but certainly a nice relaxing afternoon. I set off at midday today with no idea where I was going, but headed randomly to Castle Douglas, then north by Old Bridge of Urr and Corsock and west to Balmaclellan. There’s a fine view from there across the Ken valley to the Rhinns of Kells.
Then a few miles up to Dalry, then east towards Moniaive and Thornhill, again with a good view back to the Rhinns of Kells, with their strange names: Meaul, Corserine, Millfire and Meikle Millyea.
Through Moniaive and onwards as far as Penpont, where I turned southwards down Nithsdale through Keir Mill and Glenmidge.Views across Nithsdale were often pretty impressive.
Reaching the A76 at Auldgirth, it was a fast run down to Dumfries, where I took the coast road, stopping on the way at Sweetheart Abbey.
I stopped again at Drumburn, where you can see the village of Carsethorn down on the shore and look across the Solway to the Cumbrian hills.
Continuing on westwards, I looked in at Rockcliffe, where some hardy families were bathing from the beach.
Calling in at Dalbeattie for some decent petrol, I took the Kirkcudbright road and headed home after 120 miles of thoroughly enjoyable therapy.
