Apparently, it is National Album Day. A cynical ploy to sell more albums? Probably, but what’s wrong with buying more music?
This year’s theme is ‘rock’. A friend of mine would occasionally exclaim, while spinning some vinyl delight of his, “If I didn’t already own this I’d have to run out and buy it.”
So the question du jour is…
What rock album has an enduring place in your heart and record collection?
So many to choose from but I’ll go with this. It takes me back to a time when life was fun and new, and all these years later it still draws me in to the distraction of all else. I do, and I always will, love it.
As an 8 year old in 1976, I didn’t catch this until a lil later in life… when a biker friend of the family started to influence my ideas and music… it’s just great rock music!!!
Some good and interesting choices so far and, no doubt, more to come. I’m a huge fan of ackerdacker but ONLY the Bon SCOTT era!! I was fortunate enough to have seen them live a couple of times - concert rather than ‘festival’ so much the better option.
However, much as I love AC/DC, if I’m restricted to ‘THE ONE’ album, my choice would have to be
I know, cheating a bit as it’s a double but if it has to be only one of the two I’ll take disc 1 because that’s the one with “EMERALD” on it … “Brian DOWNEY on drums!”
And yes, I’m also aware of some ‘controversy’ around how much of the album was directly sourced from live performances but, hey, it still sounds just the way they did live and in the flesh in the Lizzy concerts that I attended in the mid to late seventies. That band could rock!!
I’ve always been a Rush fan and nearly chose 2112 but Brothers in Arms is my favourite album of all time. Such good memories of Miami Vice and playing the album on tape using my Sony Walkman.
Emerson Lake and Palmer - Tarkus, Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery (although they were getting a bit overblown by then!)
Rick Wakeman - Journey to the Centre of the Earth (especially on headphones)
Yes - Close to the Edge and Fragile
Camel - Snow Goose and a few others!
Dream Theater (they can get carried away too!)
If it counts as rock, an influential album/group was…
And to mention some that others haven’t, there’s:
There’s a lot of AC/DC and Motorhead in my collection to, but my favourite albums/groups aren’t rock. You can guess what my ‘era’ was, Kraftwerk, Ultravox, OMD, Human League. Though I think Ultravox could rock, saw them live a couple of times and in recent years Midge Ure playing the old songs and giving it all with wailing guitar and showers of spittle. (Was at front of stage ).
If it’s not ‘rock’ then Ultravox’s live stuff can still shake the theatre and there are many times in my youth I’ve played The Voice on repeat loud enough to annoy the neighbours…
