Setting the timing. This is a Shovel but it doesn’t matter what bike as long as it has or had points.
Spark plugs out and bike in top gear so the engine can be turned over by hand with the back wheel or kick start. Wooden washing line pegs to hold the pushrod tubes up while ensuring setting top dead centre on the front pot compression stroke. Set the points using a light so they are just opening. Check and set the points gap by turning the engine to the top of the cam (widest gap) and turn the engine back to top dead centre. Static timing done.
Check dynamic timing. Timing plug out check top dead centre alignment on flywheel and mark on the casing and front sprocket. Turn the back wheel backwards until the advance mark on the flywheel and mark the front sprocket.
Using the trusty timing gun start the engine and check timing, tickover on TDC mark and revving engine to watch advance mark meet the casing mark. Advance unit therefore working and dynamic timing done.
