I just remembered in the nick of time to SORN the Daytona off the road for the Winter before a new month starts. Can you believe it’s December tomorrow!
Don’t forget yours, if you were going to do it but kept putting it off like me.
Cheers

SORN’d the GS yesterday as it’s going back next month so didn’t want to loose the best part of a month’s road tax but thanks for the heads up
So, do you Guys SORN to save on vehicle tax payments? Do you then get insurance discounts as well due to the bikes being in their sheds for the winter?
What happens if the MOT is due during the winter, or do you make sure the MOTs renew during the summer?
Yes, with 4 out of 6 of my household vehicles needing to pay road tax I prefer to limit the cost when not in use.
The Triumph MOT is due in January but I will get it done on or after 1st March 2024 because an expired MOT is fine if the vehicle is off the road.
Ah, ok @geoffb (not something I have to sort on any of mine being historic but nice to know). I also found out that insurance is required before anything can be taxed these days. DVLA have all seeing eyes now.
I’ve just seen that there’s insurance called “laid up insurance” available so thought I’d have a cost comparison whatsit from Mr Google and Co.
There’s hardly any saving at all from any of the insurers on any of mine. And, knowing insurers, I can almost bet it’ll be a right faff and cost more in the long run.
And I bet you will lose the years NCB as well
I don’t usually SORN vehicles because as soon as I do that the sun will make an appearance on a preposterously warm winter day and I’ll want to go for a ride. I’ve made an exception ths year withy the Street Triple because I can jump on the Sprint instead. I’ve left the insurance in place as it’s pretty cheap anyway, relatively speaking.
As for reminders, with three bikes and a car, which is eleven things to remember (the MV is under three years old so doesn’t need an MoT) I lose track quite easily. I put reminders in my phone with alerts one month before.
In the Netherlands we neither have SORN nor MOT, but I do get an insurance discount if I keep the bike off the road December through March.
I SORN’d the Thruxton at the end of October. The. mot was due as I took it off the road. Didn’t think it was worth getting a mot until I put it back on the road in the new year. I always keep one bike on the road through the winter as I could not face not being able to ride for months on end.
My first question is - Surely with the tax at only approx £10 per month you’re not really saving much (as you say the insurance is pretty cheap so you’ve kept it)?
My second point is more generic, did you know you can set up an MOT alert through the gov website so no need to put a phone alert on.
For me it is not really about saving money. I just don’t see the point in keeping it taxed (or a mot) when I know I’m not going to ride it until the new season next year.
I would check your insurance policy as some require valid tax and MOT
I have an app on the phone which notifies me twice before renewing time. It’s jut called MOT. from the apple app shop (foc) I’d show what’s on but as usual I can’t ever load pics from my phone on here.
It’s not much money but if I’m already on the vehicles tax website I might as well defer payment than pay it.
I’d forgotten about the MoT reminders. Definitely another good option. I just like to give myself the nod at the end of the previous month so I know what’s going out. Also, it’s there in my schedule all the time if I’m looking ahead further.
I SORN any unused vehicles on principal, to deny Fishy and *unt any more of my hard earned money. They would only send it abroad or stuff it in their own pockets.
Good call mate. I had a quick look and my insurance does cover my bikes even when they are under a SORN
I have my M.O.T. Due 1st of march and as Saul says you do get the occasional good day so it’s just not worth the hassle.
