Today I have spent all day, (yes all day), swapping a set of pipes on my t120..
What should have been a relatively easy job turned into me now needing therapy…..
The exhausts come with link pipes and gaskets to get you started.. the trouble is the gaskets, (actually Triumph ones in a Triumph bag), are what caused all of the problems.. I dont know if any one has done one of these swaps but what a pain in the arse they turned out to be.. Too many parts that move about while you are trying to line up to get some sort of symmetry on the two pipes.. And then the Poxy gaskets would not seal correctly, and are still not right, but had to walk away from it to enable me to collect my thoughts over a few beers..
Is there a correct way to get the pipes to seal correctly? Not that I really want to but is it worth using a small smear of exhaust sealing paste to get them to seal correctly.. Although that being said its almost like the pipe clip will not close tight enough to seal the exhaust from leaking..
Has any one else had this problem? and if so how did they get over it..?
Thanks Iron.. Did you get this off of the internet? is it similar to Sikaflex..
Im not unduly bothered about it not sealing 100% as with a small leak it allows excess condensation to drain out of the pipes.. Just need it MOT able.. I also have a ‘66 Harley Pan shovel that leaks all of the time due to only using one bolt to fasten the headers to the exhaust outlet on the Cylinder.. But I am very lucky that where I take it for mots they are a tad short sighted… lol..
Chris, I’ve used this on nearly every Triumph - especially T140s with push ins as I like a larger diameter exhaust on the push overs earlier Bonnies. So I insert made up top hats into the head and use the earlier T120 exhausts. Just because they look, and sound better.
I also use it on any joints when using after market megaphones etc. It’s pretty thick and gloopy and a bugger to get off. It sticks like shit to a blanket. Clean it up before it goes off - takes about a day. Once cured its like a rubber compound and a complete bugger to get off.
I get it from Amazon etc on line. I don’t remember if I’ve used sikaflex, I tend to stick to stuff I know.
I think I might try masking up the pipes to try and stop it from going everywhere during installation.
Im a bit disappointed with the peashooters from Norman Hyde, they don’t seem to 100% fit correctly, and would be better if the pipe was one complete piece instead of 2 separate parts with a gasket linking to the down pipes..
I will percy…vere…. who ever he is..lol.. I will let you know if it works..
Norman Hyde isn’t Norman Hyde any more. The company is owned by Moto Legends Distribution now.
I’ve had stuff off of them and it’s been of first class quality (I really like their 7 plate clutches - now made in Italy). I had a problem with delivery once but phoning them I found them helpful and got things sorted for me.
That probably explains why the pipes aren’t the best fit then, probably mass produced overseas..
I can’t complain, you get what you pay for… I knew I should have gone for the Toga’s, but they where another £250… My trip to Scandinavia later on this year has begun to get expensive as I’ve up-rated the suspension front and back, changed the pipes, a new (comfortable???) seat, two tyres , and a set of risers to get the bars up a tad…. The stupid thing is I also have a Sport Glide that would do the trip a piece of Piss, but I need that extra challenge to make it challenging… I think…
