T120 Project

All done. Still needs a speedo and a bit of fettling I expect.

If it’s ok to ride, I’ll probably get a 9 hole Bonny head and a pair of carbs on it (as that’s what it would have been when it came out of the factory) and I like the look of two carbs. I can then write Bonneville on it.

Nick Bloor backing some Triumph teams worldwide to build some customs. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with. Imagine that, getting funding, access to machine shops, paint shops etc. marvelous. Unfotunately I wasn’t asked otherwise we’d all be in the UK team.
How cool would that be…

I’ve, annoyingly, found that my paintwork has developed small patches of deformities/bubbles that have taken on the form of glass fibre pattern. I’ll do some photos once I can resist grabbing a large hammer to sort the issue.

I’ve known that ethanol fuel can cause bubbling by leaching through the glass fibre. I therefore puposely lined the tank with a known (to me) liner that resists and seals against ethanol content. I bloody hate lining tanks as it usually takes all day and is a complete arse to do.

The liner was given more than double the required curing time before I painted the tank. I really have no idea why these defects have occured and am tempted to have a dig into the damaged spots to investigate. Hopefully, again, without using a very large hammer. But I’m thinking that the original glass layup wasn’t given the time to cure/vent before the gel coat was applied. As it looks like it’s delaminating in one or two small areas. I don’t know enough about the subject unfortunately.

I can, however, honestly say that I will not buy another of these types of tanks. If I’m ever near the supplier again I will have a chat with him.

I then discover that an old memory is in fact, true:
The Road Vehicles (construction and use) Regs 1986 basically state that all road vehicles from 1st July 1973 must have fuel tanks made from metal.

The fibreglass tank is legally, therefore, a wall hanging. :neutral_face: another kick in the pocket and another little step away.

What a ball ache! But I guess at least you found it before being in the middle of using it and having a groin based fire ball from a few too many drops on the headers.
