Hi
Maybe asking the impossible looking for set of T140 crankcases unstamped to bring back engine to original circa 1983 TSS.
Do crankcases from other years useable or are they specific to model
Cheers
Sounds like one for @iron. He’s our resident old Bonneville expert, among other things.
If @Iron comes around, he may have some insight.
Edit: Simultaneous answer (hopefully we agreed

I’ve read of TSS cranks being used in T140 engines but that they require special conrods being made up due to the TSS crankshafts having larger diameter but narrower journals (the conrods are about half an inch further apart).
So, in theory, if the cranks can be made to work in a T140 engine then T140 cases should work in a TSS engine.
It’d be worth to get someone to measure the crankcase barrel opening dimensions in a T140 to compare with the TSS barrels before you go and buy some. That’s if you can find some (I have seen unstamped ones for sale occasionally).
I’ve no engines open at the moment (none planned either) so I can’t help much.
Thanks, dont think crankshaft comes into it as iits designed for off set conrods. Theres a good artical on old Sump mag

Got a set of NOS T140ES unstamped cases.
TSS cases are black anyone have idea how Triumph painted them powdercoating seems wrong.

I don’t know how they painted the cases but it won’t have been a high quality process.
I have a Harris that uses the TSS crankshaft machined down (tragically) to suit standard T140 rods.
This is my spare crankshaft
It’s a new old stock TSS that’s been machined. San’s the flywheel of course. If I ever use it I’ll have to swop it as there is zero chance of finding another TSS flywheel.![]()
@BBM Hi do you have the parts for the electric starter? From what I gather, the currently available stuff is pretty pants.![]()
Hi,
only thing I can think off it the T160 triple has starter motor and an upgrade is to put in a Starter motor from David Madigan (in USA) who is a bit of a genius on making parts for triples.
I think you can get one from L.P. Williams or Rob North triples, they are really good quality and smaller than the standard, as for compatibility not sure on TSS fitment as never had starter motor out. If stuck I can message David but try both as they might have the in stock mention my name John Montgomery
hope this helps

Hi thanks for that, I think the problem for twins is the availability/quality of the timing case.
Problem with the starters is that it was a rushed design and used the timing side gears to turn over the engine. Starters should run onto the clutch basket.
The sprag gear on the timing side couldn’t handle any form of kick back. Even with the timing set perfect the engine will sometimes cough which would basically rip the guts out of the sprag or timing pinion teeth.
There are starter kits available that build onto the primary side but your hat will fly off when you see the price. And, anyhow, being a rufty tufty Triumph owner, who wants a starter on a Bonny anyway ![]()
I do, I’m 66 and have bad knees.
But £2500 cheezo!

To be honest, I’m seriously considering this. The Harris is likely to end up being a forever bike (I’ve spent way too much on it already). Although with the dropping value of these old bikes, it’s likely to be half the value of the bike to do the conversation.![]()
