Warranty Renewal

Triumph R3Gt 2020 just out of warranty. Been offered renewal for £39.00 per month. Thoughts please…

Personally I don’t think it is worth the money, that’s £480 a year so whatever went wrong would have to hugely exceed that to make any financial sense. If you want to spend that sort of money pm then stick it in a fix my bike account and save it for a rainy day :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

That’s a lot of cash! But then, I don’t take extended warranties on anything…

It makes me wonder about reliability when manufactures are pushing extended warranties on their bikes. Or are they just out for making money when they are secretly confident that their bikes won’t go wrong that often.

I’d guess these warranties are provided by a 3rd party insurance with the manufacturer or dealer getting a cut of the premium. The smallprint would confirm if that was the case. Either way, the extended warrantyies would be being pushed with a idea of someone other than the customer being better off on average.

I always think that if the insured event would be a serious financial disaster if it happened, like your house burning down, it’s worth insuring against. But if it would only cost a few hundred to fix, it’s better to keep your money in your pocket. After all, the insurance company is obviously pretty confident that the insurable event is unlikely to happen.

I think we all know which option is true!

I’ve never taken out extended warranties on any car or bike I’ve had and so far haven’t had to pay out for anything apart from servicing and general maintenance so I’m thousands in credit. If you want the peace of mind by all means go ahead, but you’ll be paying for it. As others have said you could put that money away each month and if something does go wrong you’ve already got some funds to call on. I looked at the BMW extended warranty and had I taken it out that would have more or less doubled the cost of keeping my bike on the road. Looking at it another way if I didn’t take it out the money would more or less pay for my tax, insurance and servicing. If you are keen read the Ts and Cs as very often they don’t cover everything the factory warranty does.

It’s also wise to consider what is and is not covered … many items are excluded in the small print .
