World Cup of Motorcycle Names

Mooching around the internet this afternoon I was remininded of the marvellously monikered ‘Velocette Venom’.

So many models are just a combination of letters and numbers (R1, 1390 (KTM), GSXR-750 etc.) and it made me wonder what is the best ever name for a motorcycle?

Post favourites and I’ll turn it in to a poll when we have enough, so we can solve this argument once and for all (maybe).

Scott Flying Squirrel is an unusual choice of name… and quite an odd design too.

I’d forgotten about the Flying Squirrel. Excellent suggestion.

The Harley Iron obviously.
and absolutely the Bonneville,
so good other things are named after it:
a dam
the Salt Flats
a car
a prehistoric lake
a school in Clapham
several actors
a place in France
and a coat of arms,
as well as hundreds of other copies like bobber, T100, etc.

Please don’t submit The MV Dragster or even worse the Yamaha Drag Star into the poll….. :rainbow_flag:

This question is now bouncing around in my head, and got me looking through some classic magazine adverts!

How about some names that infer speed -

Royal Enfield Bullet

BSA A65 (and CCM) Spitfire

Triumph Rocket 3

Honda XR250 Tornado

You’ve all mist the best name, namely Speedmaster.
(The first review of this I read said ‘you won’t be mastering any speed’.)

You started with the truly excellent Velocette Venom, but could also mention its smaller (350cc) sibling, the Viper.

What about the plastic maggot? Or the brick? Or do they have to be manufacture’s names…
In which case “Legend” is difficult to beat!

Then there was the Ariel and BSA Cyclone, the BSA Thunderbolt, Lightning, Firebird, Road Rocket, the Gold Star and Rocket Gold Star, the Norton Atlas and Dominator, the Ariel Arrow, the AJS Hurricane, and lots of other less exciting names. Names were definitely a thing in those days.

I’ll compile all the names in to one list later this week. Might have to run the polls in heats…

I shan’t mention the Noddy bike then.
