I have both ear issues and no intercom so I am, as is often the case, utterly unqualified to answer .
Well thanks for all your comments, they’re much appreciated. I suppose I’ll find out if I splash out. But perhaps “in ear” phones might be the way.
Next on me list is a Shark s900… if it fits, i’ll Review it and tell you the wind noise levels.
Thats the problem with helmets, you never know how they perform untill its too late to return them
Yes, can hear my satnav fine with my Shoei GT Air, but that’s because I ride with earplugs so wind noise is cut right back leaving bluetooth headphones nice a clear. (Headophones are of course cranked up in volume to compensate for earplugs, meaning they have a much higher volume relative to wind noise than you would have when not wearing earplugs.)
I have quite a few helmets, with my unwearable 1990s Arai being my all time favourite but the new Arai Debut a close second.
Budget wise, I have a 7 year old Caberg Duke flip front and I can’t fault it.
My other brands are:
Fox MX + Goggles (excellent for off-roading)
Simpson Venom (love it, hard to remove/fit visor, large shell, quiet)
Shark something (heavy, large shell, nice quality, quiet)
Ruroc Atlas 2.0 (looks great, easy visor removal, noisy, large shell)
IXS open face helmet (cheap but good quality)
I also have shoei gt-air and a neotec. I wear ear plugs when ever I ride and can hear my satnav instructions, music when I want to listen to at 70+ mph without any problems.
Yeah but you’ve got giant ears haven’t you Yoda ?
Well not that I have noticed, but I will take your word for it.
Just came across this, if it helps.
Am on the look out for a new helmet too…and this thread is certainly around my price point.
I find it interesting that the thread, in the main, focused on noise.
Noise, certainly on my radar, is not near the top of the list (partly because it’s so subjective).
“Hard” list in descending order is
Full face
Internal sun visor
Pinlock ready/included
Sharp rating (4 upwards)
Cost
Weight
Double D fastening
Noise
Looks
Then will try on and check for
Fit
Comfort
Vision
So far there are some HJCs that fit the bill…
This is always my goto starting point when looking at helmets, then you can at least narrow your field down
For what it’s worth I have the Shark Spartan GT which I find great
yep, great site @HelmutVisor
Got a SCHUBERTH C4 Pro in the sales recently. Had to size up but liking it so far. Is pretty quiet but still use plugs. Had an R2 helmet from them already and their SC1 built in comms system.
No complaints from me so far. C4 Pro is definitely quieter than the R2 and cuts through the air much cleaner. Very little resistance when moving me head through the wind.
New old stock, my size too 7 and a half
I’ll have to order some of those older style goggles…I’m not recommending a pudding helmet though as they are really uncomfortable and the wind noise is, well, very windy
Bloody hell, that is just like the first helmet I ever had. It was me grandads hand me down. It was grey with light brown leather straps/ear covers. No use what so ever
I’m pretty sure that this is the first type of helmet I wore, as a pillion coming home from school (about 7 -10 years old) on the back of my dads Yamaha 90cc step through (cub rip-off).
I remember the little ear scoops and everything!
Same experience.
My mam had one like that for going on the family BSA 650 Gold Flash outfit. Eeeh them were’t days!
