Not sure where best to post this - I’ll do it here as it is “bike specific”; but feel free to move it if appropriate :innocent:

Started the brake overhaul on the NTV…

Undoing/cracking any fasteners while in situ. I have no idea what state this’ll all be in… :grimacing:

Turns out it wasn’t so bad, the caliper bolts were not monkey tight, and copper smeared. Phew.

Likewise the pad pin! Phew².

So it all came off and basically apart with no issues.

It was all exceptionally dirty, so a decent scrub is required, along, I decided, with new seals and pistons…I mean, when you’re this far in, you may as well, right!? At least then I know it’s been done!

Posting this piston removal…simply because it is one of the most satisfying “hacks” I ever discovered!

I DO need new pistons. I think, for 75 quid I may as well just replace everything…pistons, seals, rubbers, washers and pins…at least it’s then done, I guess… I suppose when you only have one disc, one front caliper and only 2 pots…you want them working at 100%!! Best treat it to “all new bits”…

So I am serving the brake caliper and the hose is disconnected from the caliper.

The hose is tied “up” but not above the height of the reservoir.

Fluid is oozing out the house.

I thought the fluid would only move when the lever is pressed, as otherwise there’s a valve at the reservoir?

No biggy as I’m replacing it all …but just curious if my master cylinder is ok?

When the brake lever is fully out there has to be a small bleed past on the MC piston seal, that is there to let the fluid “refill” the circuit as the pads wear. If that wasn’t there you’d get more lever travel as they wear.

Help! I’m stuck… Didn’t take a bloomon photo of the pad spring…and now can’t figure out how it goes back!!!

It seems to me the photo is “right” but don’t want to force it - bearing in mind it virtually fell out upon removal…it seems exceptionally tight fittong now…

Any thoughts?

New Question!

Front brake.
New hoses, new caliper seals…new pistons. Complete overhaul.

Am bleeding through and can’t get ANY pressure …I’ve used most of a reservoir…fluid is coming out the bleed nipple - can’t even see any bubbles!

So I think that the system has fluid in it.

I have even syringed IN the bleed nipple…and it squirted out the reservoir…

Why is there no pressure…it’s like it can’t get behind/round the pistons to push them out…?

Any hints, tips etc…

Ignore me…the age old problem of “Daniel…have you been patient enough…”

Another hundred or so lever squeezes and all is good!

Phew…all done, and only one sheared bolt!

So, this weekend was

Full caliper rebuilds - pistons, seals, bleed nipples,.banjos and washers plus braided hoses and new pads.
Coolant flush and replace.
New Speedo cable.
Air box deep clean and new filter.
General clean up and ACF50ing to make everything look pretty(we)…

Forks feel spongy…and a light misting on one, so maybe fork seals next…

Whilst deep down and dirty this weekend I noticed all the rear linkages look cruddy…so maybe all those will be in the cards soon too!

Forks…

Please can someone give me a 1-0-1 on damping and making the spongy/springiness more or less?

Please bear in mind…there is no adjustments…so it’s down to the fork oil.

I do not know the state of the forks/oil… I’m just gonna do an oil and seals change…so “it’s done”.

But, what can I do to make the forks less soft, if it comes to it? What are the options?

option is quite simple, heavier oil. But from a start, I’ll stick with 10 oil and see how it goes.

It says to use SAE 80 HYPOID gear oil?

usual fork oil is 10W or 15w, and sometimes 5W.
The standard on 99% of the bikes is 10W

Manual says: SAE80 HYPOID Gear Oil; but am getting really confused …is there a Halfords equivalent that’ll do the job!?

Gear oil for a fork is a full nonsense.
Just put usual fork oil.

Apologies…it was a new question, the oil for the shaft drive.

The fork oil is sorted :grin:

Im on the final drive now :smile:.

I get bogged down in the detail sometimes, if I can’t find exactly what’s in the manual, I get panicky!

But…all now ok, as I’ve sourced some :grin:
