Just non-motorbike photos

Seen people doing this pass on their bikes on YouTube , some of it looks really scary. I’ve done Applecross pass in Scotland but don’t know how it compares.

In Almere NL every so often they have a small car show. This old Bentley turned up and sounded amazing.

No, Honister Pass is a piece of cake, as is Kirkstone. The really challenging Lakeland passes are Hardknott and Wrynose, with their very steep tight hairpins and adverse camber, which I did years ago on a BMW F650GS single. I did the Bealach Na Ba to Applecross in 1970, two-up on a Norton Dominator 99 in the pouring rain. Had to stop half way up to get water out of the magneto pick-ups to stop it misfiring. I remember it as pretty steep, but not outrageous like Hardknott.

Ah I was thinking of Hardknott pass. Is that worse than Applecross??. It looks like it

We did Applecross a few years ago on my VStrom. It wouldn’t have been too bad but there were too many bicycles and campervans going up and stopping so it was quite tricky.

Yes, Hardknott is definitely the steepest, closely followed by Wrynose. You’re right: they would all be a lot easier if there wasn’t other traffic forcing you to stop and re-start.

I look forward to someone adding that to the Roads To Ride section. Or perhaps we need a Roads Not To Ride.

Hardknott and Wrynose are a road I’m very pleased to have done. Everyone should tackle it once. I’m not sure I’m in a hurry to do it again, though. I would need to be confident my bike stayed unbent to get me home again! Perhaps one of our Cumbrian members could give us an illustrated write-up.
Actually, there are plenty of Youtube videos, but I always feel they make it look less challenging than it really is.

I’ll probably give it a miss then. I don’t have the confidence or skill to tackle it nowadays being an old gimmer. I think I’ve lived in The Netherlands too long and have gotten used to flat roads all the time.

Last time I rode Hardknott and Wrynose was on a GSXR750, but there was a guy on a trike with one arm who absolutely nailed it. I was in awe!
If you get a clear run it’s not too bad but if you meet a typical tourist at the wrong part it can e tricky. If you’re in the area Wast Water is a must.

Agreed. Much more challenging than Bealach na Ba…

Very true, Kirkstone has a white line down the middle and is more or less a normal road. Honister is not challenging (apart from the odd gust of wind catching you on a bend) but at least you get chance to admire the scenery!

The other day we had a hail storm, the stuff lay on the road and garden blocking the house gutters as well.
