Just curiosity following a discussion on Vulpes’ Dolomites thread. What MPG does everyone typically get from their bikes? I am about 58kg in normal clothes, so about 61 or 62kg I would have thought with riding gear on and I am also short, so am not perhaps as much of a windbreak as a less vertically - challenged person.
Having just worked mine out for my Street Triple (2021 R) my last tank was 37.6 mpg; used to get about 45 mpg commuting. I think the Blade’s (2004) about 36 mpg ridden in a fun way but will go forever and just sip if I need to do a long, steady motorway drag.
My 2005 Speed Triple will do 28 mpg ridden “in a fun way”, 42 mpg doing prolonged motorway miles, and 32 mpg riding a mixed bag.
On my 2023 Tiger 1200 GT Explorer I averaged 44 mpg last year.
Without riding kit on I mean. Although what is “normal” is open to interpretation. This is what I would typically wear to do the food shop or other mundane stuff:
Never actually checked but on the recent Ireland trip the superduke was getting remarkably good tank range keeping a gentle pace. Low to mid 50’s I reckon. Even when going hard it gets a very respectable 42ish. Impressive for such a powerful engine. I could drop the street triple into the 20’s but you tend to use the rev’s more.
The sporting tractor is doing 62.7 mpg so far over nearly 900 miles according to it’s pooter. I can’t be trying hard enough… mind you I am putting super unleaded in it rather than the e10 rubbish
We put that in all of ours too unless on empty and no E5 available; I feel like it makes a difference…but haven’t actually worked out properly whether it does.
I haven’t put any e10 in my bike, but when normal unleaded went from e5 to e10 I noticed a significant drop in fuel consumption for my car so I tried Sainsbury’s SUL which is 97 RON and was more expensive, but the fuel consumption improvement was better than the percentage increase in the cost. I’ve swapped to Tesco’s SUL now as that’s still e5 but 99 RON but haven’t bothered to see what figures I’m getting lately. I filled the bike up last night and the pooter said I had 240 miles to empty and as I’ve got an 18L tank that seems about right.
Both my Tiger 900 and my Speed Twin 1200 produce remarkably similar results - 56 to 58 mpg in normal use. The Tiger will achieve low 60’s on a decent run.
My previous Speed Triple 1200 would average about 45 mpg.
After an engine service on my 2018 Speedmaster when I ‘reset adaptations’ on the ECU my normal daytrip fuel economy drops to around 57mpg, this creeps back up to around 62mpg over a few rides. I’m assuming this is the ECU learning how to lean out the fuel mixture to reduce emissions.
I always use E5 fuel which for the brand at my local garage is said to have zero ethanol for my region, according to it’s website when I last checked. I pick low ethanol fuel purely for the expected extra fuel range.
On motorway riding quite fast (140-160 km/h) I’m doing 45mpg. Thanks to the well designed fairing.
On local road (mountain, curves, etc) I clim up to 30mpg.
Since coming back to motorcycles about 14 years ago, I have had a few different bikes, all ridden in an average way around the relevant speed limit (), not hammering along like I’m on a race track, or pootling about at 30mph. I suspect important factors are that I don’t commute to work or ride motorways very often -
Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Electra X - over 90mpg!
Suzuki SV650S/Hyosung GT650 (Suzuki copy) - around 60mpg
Honda CB500X - 89.5mpg over a 7 year period
Triumph Speed 400 during gentle running-in - 91.5mpg
I’m sure that will drop once I can open up the little Triumph a bit!
