Pyrenees, Alps, Dolomites, N Italian Lakes

Yes the risk with Santander is there’s only 2 sailings a week, so if anything goes wrong it’s a bigger problem. For that reason we use it outbound but use Roscoff on the return as they’re daily sailings.
Plus Roscoff is a nice small relaxed port, ideal chilled end to the hol. :slightly_smiling_face: :+1:

Not sure about their church “spire” though.

Looks a bit err… “eclectic”…

Or Ecclesiastic?

or just eccentric … well any word that ends with ic

Safe crossing and yes another great tour thread to enjoy.

And away…

Only half a dozen bikes on the return.

Over and out.

Nice thread, thanks again. Did you bother with Crit air sticker just in case?

No, I’d be seriously off route if I found myself in a ZCR. Didn’t put reflective stickers on helmets either, a lot of misinformation on the 'net, only law if helmet bought in France I believe.
I did fit a UK oval which is required for Spain, but compromised on legal size (again many opinions on 'net), there’s a regulation size for cars and I’ve not found anywhere that gives a smaller spec for bikes. Having said that there was I would guess 100+ bikes on the Santander ferry but may be only 20% had a UK oval, and I never saw police making any easy fines.
Hi-viz vests and first aid kit carried, plus don’t forget your V5 and ins cert. Add puncture repair kit etc and some security and your panniers are full before you’ve started on clothing.

I did say I would upload some photos from the camera when I got back home. Been back six weeks now, where did that go?
Anyhow, turns out SWMBO was quite busy back there riding pillion, a few off-bike shots but mostly Alpine scenery - 700+ photos! I’ve managed to whittle it down to a mere 200 but struggling to pick stand-outs from there. So instead if you’re still interested (or having sleep issues) you can find them on my Google Drive at the link below. I’ve added the daily route maps so you can decipher roughly where they were taken (although a couple of routes didn’t go to plan).

Views from the back seat

“Open with preview” is probably the easiest way to view them.

Yep, think that’s going on the list for a re-visit next year. Always been iffy weather on previous visits, … plus horrendous roadworks to negotiate!

That was 2008, not sure I’ve been back since. :slightly_smiling_face:

Great photos !
Here’s a question…, hope you or someone here can advise.
We head to The Pyrenees on Thursday and will arrive in Bilbao on Saturday morning. Travelling by car.
We have about 160 miles to our first accommodation and wonder if we should go through France or Spain to get to it. Staying near Féas.
One route I’ve looked at takes me to Pamplona, Jaca and then over the top back into France .
Any thoughts on this road anyone ?

@Oldskool

This is what @Wessa and I did last year - turning off a bit before Jaca on your map. Lovely roads. We did Pamplona as well - deffo worth it (the road, it was too hot for us to venture into town).

Thanks Wim.
It’s a toss up between getting there and enjoying the drive. I would go for the best roads but Mrs O will just want to get to her first vino….!

You could always bring a box and let her get soaked in the car?:see_no_evil::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

This would / will be her anyway, so adding wine is probably not a good option… :face_vomiting: :astonished:

If you look at the route and photos dated 2023-06-16 you’ll get an idea of the scenery in that area. We rode to Biarritz from Santander ferry for our first night and then from there on to Boltana for day two, so doesn’t really fit in with your plans. But the road south from Pau through Biescas and Broto to Boltana has my recommendation. :slightly_smiling_face: :+1:
