Real life insurance claim progress and timeline

Hi there all!
Well, as you may or may not know, I had a bike accident on the 24th may and wrote the bike off. Not my fault, but I thought i’d give you an on-going account of my insurance claim and how fast (or, more than likely, slowly…) it goes in the real world.
No names of staff of course.

Righty ho.
A few details about my policy etc for reference:
Insurer broker= Carole nash
Type of insurance = Fully comprehensive
Bike= ZZR1400 19 reg.

After the accident, I was unable to obtain the third party’s reg number or name so the police obtained it. A few days later, the police sent me a letter telling me where my bike was and I had 28 days to collect it or it’d be sold to go to storage fees.

I came out of hospital and I made the first call to carole nash on 29th may (due to being in hosp, getting home, checking the forum :upside_down_face: family visits etc…) and informed them of the accident and the bikes location.
Carole nash immediately said that my details were being sent to a company called 4th dimension as they were carole nash’s accident partner…
So, I get a call from 4th dimension the following day (30th) saying that the bike will be collected and taken to surrey to be damaged assessed. It had a tracker on so this was correctly done.
4th dimension also said that because of my injuries, they had put me through to the serious injuries dept for an injury claim to proceed…

On the 30th still, I get a call from a solicitor, asking me for the other bike details (which I didn’t have from the police yet, despite asking 3 times…)
I get a message from 4th dimension saying that the bike is an “uneconomical to repair” and a write off. Sad day as I loved it.

I then heard nothing from anyone until 2nd june and that was the solicitor.
I had a few questions regarding the funding of this claim as she happened to mention “payment options”…
Basically , because I have legal protection as part of the carole nash insurance, I don’t pay for this service NOR do they take anything from my payout…
Also, I asked them why they wanted the bike details from my bike as that wasn’t part of a “personal injury” claim. She was a bit wiffy for a decent answer tbh (more on this to follow…)
The personal injury claim was for the bike gear, loss of earnings and Injuries sustained etc and not for the bike as surely that’s why i’m insured via carole nash? And, these cases can take ages (2 years!!!) to go through the courts and I want another bike asap!!

5th june. Leave a message for the poice again, requesting the bike details from the third party. No reply.

6th june, Finally, a call from the police, giving me the required information! I don’t blame those guys whatever. Totally underfunded and busy as hell.
Called carole nash (auto transferred to 4th dimension) asking why my bike is included in a personal injury claim and he said that it’s not true and shouldn’t have been said. My bike repair/replacement is separate claim. All good to progress as they now have the details.
Should be quick I hope.

I sent the requested Information to the injury lawyers company too (along with pics of my damaged gear.
I decided to google the company (injury lawyers ) and the results were not good to say the least. Big insurance companies use them but terrible reviews (minster law) on trust pilot so i’ll see…
Tbh, the solicitor given to my case seems ok so fingers crossed…

That’s it for now.
I’ll only say @Iron “over” when it is as it’s HIS trade mark and not to be used lightly!
More to follow…

Hopefully you are feeling and getting better. Slowly does it, I’m sure.
This will be interesting to see how it pans out both with bike replacement and injury claims. It’ll also be interesting to hear how your premiums go too.
Most important is that you are on the mend. Best whatsits and all that my man…

How about you @ducatitotriumph ? Are you on the mend? Having to deal with insurance etc is insult to injury IMO. So far so good though, hope it all goes well mate

Good to hear you’re on the mend and looking for another bike :+1:

I’m also insured through Carole Nash so interested to see how smoothly this all progresses!

Yikes. I’ll have a drink for your recovery later tonight. As for what you describe, this is (one of) the reasons why I’m a member both of our equivalent of your AA and their motorbike subdivision. One day I may need a big brother, and they are doing a good job in these cases.

Glad to hear your on the mend, hope your injuries are not too serious.

Has the third party admitted liability yet?
I wont probe further Q’s about the specifics as don’t want to hinder any subsequent claim etc.
Never know who reads forums.

9 jun . Just a call from the 4th dimension ref storage fees.
A bit confusing as it is asking for £28 per day for fees and they are saying it could take a while as the 3rd party need to agree? As I pointed out to them, my bike has already been written off so why are they storing it or waiting…?
And, as i’m fully comprehensively insured, why am I even being expected to sign this document? I just want my bike insurance money so I can buy a new one.
Again, it all whiffs…

Guy I work with got his bike nicked 3 weeks ago, they got the young (insert insult here), the same night, and the bike was placed in storage. Now cause it wasnt insured, ( off road needs work) he has to fork out over £300 in charges, for minding his own business his way.

Please please please do not sign the 4th Dimention form! It’s extremely surprising what you could be putting your wallet on the hook for. At the moment liability for storage costs are between the insurance company, 4th Dimension and the third party. It should remain that way. I would also shy away from accepting any kindly offer of a hire bike for the same reason.
The brokers are using 4D to minimise costs to both themselves and the insurance company (who is not Carol Nash). You can deal with the insurance company direct and they will make you an offer for your bike. However you will have made a claim on your policy so until a no fault claim on your behalf is agreed you’ll be liable for increased premiums and loss of NCB. If you accept it the agreed amount will end up in your bank account fairly quickly minus your excess allowing you to get back on the road whilst everyone argues the toss over who’s getting what from the pie and eventually you should hopefully receive what’s owed for your clothing and injuries.
All the best to getting back on 2 wheels :+1:

My mate was reversed over by a driver :astonished: and got hire bikes through McAms, fortunately he didn’t fall liable for the cost as it came to over £20 000! So DON’T sign anything!

A bit like “must have FSH” is becoming a bit of a moot point…is having “insurance with XXXX well known company” also becoming a bit of a mis-nomer?

What’s the point in having "insurance with that good motorcycle orientated specialist " if it ends up being such a precarious situation…

How has the insurance areana even got to a state where we have to “be weary of signing forms”?

Another area of society that we are forced to have (must have insurance) but it’s all for “their” benefit, not ours…

Maybe this should go in the “things that yank my chain” thread!

Unfortunately companies like 4th Dimension use claims handlers and not solicitors in the main so won’t fight for the best result but rather try and settle quickly. I would suggest a quick call to someone like White Dalton may give you a better insight into what should happen and your best outcome. Definitely worth a call

This^^^^ they (4th Dimension) don’t have a good reputation and the cynic in me thinks they are only out to make as much money as possible, which they do through storage and particularly bike hire fees where they rinse the other parties insurer turning what would normally be a reasonable settlement into a huge one and if the other insurer then refuses to pay they come after you. Obviously your claim is complicated because of you injury so like HV I’d be inclined to get a specialist solicitor rather than trust that lot.

When you said that Carole Nash is your insurer, I knew that you were in trouble. I will never use that bunch of lazy bandits again. I genuinely wish you the best of luck.

13th june… I get a letter (and email) from ML, asking for additional pics and a statement of what happened after the accident…
They also want to know what location i ended up, how far i slid and where he ended up…
To finish it off, what emergency helicopter area was the one that picked me up…
They fail to understand (repeatedly…) that it was only a 2 second respose time i had AND i was in no fit state to even sit up, let alone ask for details and take pics ffs…
To rub it in, they say "this HAS to be 100% correct " so i keep telling them that they need to contact the police to get a 100% correct report as I WASN’T ABLE TO!
