What You Been Doing With Your Triumph Today

Just over 50 sunny miles for Helmut and I today on the Street Triple and Nightstorm to one of our favourite cafes for lunch and back. It was a gorgeous day, but we have been on the bikes almost constantly for the last few days, so just did a little jaunt. The roads were so, so busy anyway that there wasn’t much chance of a free run anywhere. Still enjoyable, of course :slightly_smiling_face:.

68 ‘Triumph owners’ miles with my cousin today (Speed 400 and Street Triple) but it was more about where to stop for coffee… The Woodhouse Kippen!

Today I popped over to SportsBikeShop, if you can call a 150 mile round trip ‘popping’ I bought a wheel spinner and travel sized can of chain lube with the aim of being able to lube chain on big tours (like my forthcoming 2 week Europe trip). Unfortunately, wheel spinner is too robust and heavy for taking on trips but decided to buy it anyway for use at home.

For the last 6 years I’ve been using a paddock stand to lube chain but I still can’t bring myself to drop bike off the stand without bracing it via the passenger backrest with my arm and shoulder. That’s fine, except I have to first remove the bag and shelf I’ve attached to luggage rack, which sort of defeats my purpose of adding those i.e. having something permanently attached to bike for easy getaway on day trips.

Can’t you get a centre stand?

No option for centre stand, bike only has 10cm ground clearance!

Can’t you get bigger wheels?

Would this help?

I had a look at those, but as we use the car and trailer for our chain-driven bikes it’s easy to take a wheel spinner. Had I still be doing long trips with the Speed Triple I definitely would have purchased one of those.

I did have a look for those side jacks. They don’t tend to say what minimum height they support and those that do are a bit too long for my bike. Perhaps I should have another look and measure.

Edited to add… There’s also the issue that I see in the reviews that it doesn’t really work if chain is on opposite side to the sidestand (like my bike) because jack gets in way of chain.

There’s probably a way of bodging some jack mechanism on my bike, but don’t want the trouble or risk. Especially as I’ve managed without anything all these years and just lubed the chain once mid tour by the tedious roll forward a bit, spray, then repeat.

Fitted a pair of auxiliary lamps to the Striple. Also fitted a power supply that is located on the handlebars providing both USB A and a USB C outlets for my phone and my Insta360 X4.
