What You Been Doing With Your Triumph Today

Happy new bike. The speed twin is a cracking bike. Lucky you :grinning:

A lovely day, and with the mrs. off all day competing with horses, I took advantage and had a great 100 mile bimble.

Your Trophy will be getting to “that” sort of age. Might be lucky with the carb cleaner, if not have a look for cracks in the vauum pipes to the carbs, also the carb to head rubbers. Could also be the carb diaphragms perishing, but you don’t want to here that do you.
Son recently fixed similar symptoms on his Suzuki with new diaphragms.

A quick … pretty quick … ride out for brekkies. Usual place , Super Sausage.
Cold start. Arrived with cold hands as only 8 degrees on the out trip of around 40 miles.
It warmed up for the return journey.
Lovely ride.
This RS Speed Triple is definitely the Best Bike I’ve ever owned. It does it all.

Thanks for that, I had a good look at the carb rubbers both from the airbox and to the head and they do look in perfect condition, the bike has been mine since new, always garaged. However you’ve just reminded me that I need to do the wd40 spay test when running to check for leaks. I’ve thought about what it could be and have come to the conclusion it could be anything including the carb diaphragms, I’m not sure how far I’m going to go alone with this. I might end up handing it over to the local ex triumph mechanic and just pay. Reading around there are so many faults that could fit the bikes symptoms and I could end up spending a lot replacing things ‘just in case’ whereas a trained mechanic might be able to pinpoint the problem. I was thinking about a rolling road diag as that’s when the problem is most apparent.
If you think of anything else please shout up.
I was going to try running on prime as my next test once the forte stuff arrives.
I do have one HT lead that is measuring 4.6kohm where the other 3 are around 5.0-5.1kohms, but speaking to the mechanic he thinks that’s ok because it’s number 2 cylinder which is the shortest lead.
I just wish it hadn’t happened immediately after filling up with petrol, that would have ruled out bad fuel. Here’s hoping it’s something simple. :weary:
I will check the vacuum line from the carb to the fuel tap though. I inspected it but never tested it as it was activating the fuel tap. I checked the vacuum caps on the other 3 carbs, visually, and they seemed good .

WD40 test definitely worth doing, especially if you have those horrible corrugated plastic pipes that split and impossible to see.

Nothing, been laying 100 ton paving slabs and welding up washing line poles. But these came and reminded me of nice things:

Apart from keep your hands warm

I’ll probably get a Speed Triple at some stage, but not until Triumph revamp the RS, it must have the electronic suspension of the RR and the electronics of the new Street Triple, ie wheelie control finally seperated from the TC! If/when they do that, I’ll buy one. If not, I’ll go for a 3rd Superduke. Was keen on a Tuono V4 there for a while until I seen people saying 80/90 mile, look for petrol. That just wouldn’t be practical enough for me.

I was looking at an MT10 until a guy that worked at our local dealer called it an “Empty 10” for the same reason.

Commute for me on the Street Triple today - lovely weather still :+1:. It was one of those evenings where all of the lunatics seem to be on the roads though, some very weird driving decisions being made :person_facepalming:.

After adding the forte moto power I to the trophy, I took it out for a 50mile spin. It was stuttering a bit initially, but as the ride went on it reduced considerably to the point that I needed to try and induce it by rough use of the throttle. I can still get it to stutter around 60-70mph by shutting the throttle quick and then opening quick. However before it would just keep stuttering and not pull through it, now it stutters for a beat or two and then pulls through. Considering how bad it was a few weeks ago, this is amazing. So I’m hoping a few more miles with the premium fuel and forte stuff will clear it all together :crossed_fingers:
Obviously it could still be an electrical gremlin that might rear it’s head again, but for now I’m thinking extended use of e10 fuel causing gunk to build up in the fuel lines/float bowls/jets. Bloody stuff, I had problems a few years ago when I let the E5 stuff sit for a while and didn’t use the trophy, however I’ve been trying to use the trophy on a regular basis and that seemed to work until this E10 arrived :rage: I guess it’s the premium stuff for me from now on.
Edited to add: Nearly forgot, tried the wd40 test for leaking carb rubbers etc, no change to idle, so I reckon we’re good there. Plus I tried running on prime for a bit, no change either.

Spent half the day pootling along on sunny single-track country lanes (a route I programmed into satnav last year). This is my favourite time of year, with trees in leaf again, may blossom in the hedgerow, and verges brimming with cow parsely and red campion.

I twice had a hare running down the road ahead of me and I rode over a swarm of bees on the road! Thought it was a patch of dried mud but as I got very close could see it moving and insects hovering over it.

Loop took 90 minutes and near the end I passed a bench outside a village that looked inviting, so I did a quick blast on an A road to get refreshments to bring back to there and spent half an hour relaxing. Whilst sat there a dozen or so members of the Triumph owners club passed, Triumph Herald that is

Wasn’t sure what to do next, so thought as I’d had such a nice day so far, I’d do route again in reverse  Things always look different when doing that so was like a totally different ride.

During the ride I was thinking it might have been even nicer in an open face helmet. I’ve never ridden with one, but think I’ll get one and try.

I agree with you about the open face helmet. I hardly ever wear my full-face - it feels so shut-in and cut off from the outdoors. I nearly always wear an open face with a visor. Maybe not so protective, but in 50-odd years of riding I’ve never hit any part of my head on the ground anyway, so I’ll take my chance.
