Hi , im fairly new to Triumphs as mostly had Jap stuff and then Harley’s in the past.. So please bare with me as i learn about Triumphs..
I have several bikes , as I dont like getting rid of them just for the sake of it, and to be honest they all have good memories that I can relate to in my head… so hence the collection, having said that There are some that I have got rid of and still regret getting rid of..
So I thought it a good idea to join a forum to glean some info on changing a few things I am not so impressed with on my "2021 T120 ..
I am interested in what other owners have changed on their bikes, especially things like bars, tires, exhausts, suspension upgrades, front and back, and other stuff along the way.
Where are aftermarket parts available from?? Looking for a set of Tracker bars, but want to keep my heated grips for my trip this summer to the arctic, is this still possible??? as i’m sure that iv’e read somewhere that this could be a problem with a set of tracker bars… or is that wrong..
I have been invited on a trip over to the arctic circle this coming summer so would like to change the things mentioned before then if possible..
Hi @chrisybee and welcome to our little bit of the net. No apologies needed for long posts here, we like those. I’ve got a few Triumphs but a T120 isn’t among them. Lots of advice and opinions coming soon from others, no doubt.
I went from The Netherlands - through Germany, ferry to Denmark, across “the bridge” into Sweden and North towards Finland. South towards Helsinki, ferry to Tallinn. Across the Baltic States to Klaipeda, ferry to Germany and home from there.
Welcome to the forum. I put the T120 handlebars on my Speedmaster for a better riding position and if you’re looking for a riding position that is a little more upright I can recommend…
There’s also a clear anodised one if you didn’t fancy black.
Wow thats how (hopefully) we are coming home, but going up the side of Norway to the top and then back down Finland.. Thats the plan any way…. what time of year did you go? We are hoping to leave UK mid July, but taking it slow as there is no rush, maybe being away from home for possibly 2 months..ish..
Any tips you can pass on would be much appreciated.. thanks again..
I did it in two weeks in August last year (got a two-week pass from the mrs. ). When travelling South through Finland I’d suggest following the Via Karelia hugging the Russian border. Beautiful route to ride. The Curonian Spit just off Klaipeda in Lithuania is nice to visit, too. And the Hill of crosses is worth a visit.
I need to get a different angle on the bars as they make my wrist ache (standard t120 bars), are the Speedmaster bars wider than the t120 0nes?
So if I have got this right you placed a set of t120 bars on your speed master.. Did you use the risers as well as the t120 bars?
Looking at the risers in the link you sent, you can alter the pitch on the bars using the risers.. I did try turning the bars in the factory clamps a wee bit but the pipes from the brake reserviour fouled and impinged the turning abillity of the bars…. If I remember correctly..
I also want to change the pipes for something with an up sweep to allow room to get the rear spindle out without having to remove half the back end off first… lol…
They are a wildly different shape, they call them ‘beach bars’ but it’s more like pushing a wheelbarrow than riding a bike. I bought the bike new and had the nearly straight bars off the Bobber fitted with the associated brake and clutch lines. (That was a Triumph option, Speedmaster is effectively a two seater Bobber.)
Yes, I used the risers as well. I switched to the T120 handlebars after a year or two because they had more rise than the Bobber’s, and they’re chrome Then decided I needed still more rise and pull-back so added those Motone risers too. I’d already used up the free slack in the cables switching to the T120 handlebars so needed to make some custom cables when adding the risers. You should be OK just fitting the risers, as Motone’s website says, the stock cables have just enough slack for them.
Yes, you can adjust the angle of the bars. But be aware that the hand controls have a little peg that fits into a hole in the handlebar. So if like me you want to adjust the angle of them too (to keep clutch and brake levers at a comfortable angle) you will need to be prepared to widen the little holes in the bars into a little slot to let them be turned.
By a tiny fraction no doubt, but insignificant, you’ll only need a couple of millimetres. There’s a much bigger 10mm x 30mm (ish) slot on the underside for the heated grip wiring to come out.
And anyway, the only time you put any force into the handlebars is when using them as a lever when picking up the bike after dropping it on a roundabout diesel spill, touching front brake with bars turned when manoeuvring. or putting a front wheel onto a grass verge when trying to make room passing vehicles on single-track roads
Or braking really hard at 80 0dd mile an hour because you where trying to overtake a line of cars and a lorry…. haha.. not a good memory but it did happen on one of my Harleys while up in Scotland..
