This was yesterday - my brother is visiting from Canada, and I was mostly beating him at 10-pin bowling then pool.

He says I am too competitive… don’t know what he means, but I WAS THE WINNER. :1st_place_medal:

Stopped lakeside between Stresa and Baveno, the knackered textiles took some drying out..
(Was starting to head homeward).
Sadly no foreign trips this year (family stuff got in the way),… does a few days on the Scillies next week count?
… Next year. :+1:

TFFT. We’ve endured M5 silliness all through the summer so it’ll be nice to be able to get to the MIL’s in well under 4 hrs for a change, and even nicer to do it coming back

Still busy in the Lakes

Done my “due diligence” / history homework, didn’t fancy flying into a war zone!

The Dutch merchant navy was suffering heavy losses from the Royalist fleet based in Scilly. On 30 March 1651, Lieutenant-Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp arrived in Scilly to demand reparation from the Royalist fleet for the Dutch ships and goods taken by them.

For many years in the Isles of Scilly, the local legend was that the state of war was still in effect.

Peace was declared on 17 April 1986, 335 years after the supposed declaration of war. The Dutch ambassador joked that it must have been horrifying to the Scillonians “to know we could have attacked at any moment.”

Don’t recollect we’ve sunk any Dutch Navy lately, so should be ok. :slightly_smiling_face: :+1:

Oddly I don’t remember it being included in my History O Level syllabus.
But I suppose we was still at war back then, so may be not “history”.

They did burn the English fleet in the Medway in 1667 and blockaded the Thames for several weeks. I blame the Tory government…
