Today I have mostly been working on the routes for my upcoming trip…
I like the picture of your Great Aunt and was interested in the motorcycle so did some digging around on t’tinternet
There’s quite a few photos around of the same bike with the same background so obviously taken at a studio.
I think it was this one
Charles Howell photographer sudios at the Pleasure Beach in Blackpool. The year of the photo seems to be as the registration plate rather than the bike.
I believe the bike is a 1920s 350 Coventry Eagle - it looks to be the 1928/9 model but I did find a photo with a 1927 registration plate. However he seems to have a few bikes available.
Apparently the cloche (French for bell) hat (as worn by your Great Aunt) was very fashionable in the 20s along with the ‘Eton Crop’ hairstyle. It was also fashionable to adorn the hats with embellishments -
a knot was to show that the wearer was married
a bow was to show that the wearer was single and happy to socialise
an arrow was to show that the wearer was single but her heart was already given to someone (you may already know who had her heart)
What a great photo, thanks for sharing ![]()
That’s a good find @Iron ! Very interesting.
I never met her and I’m not sure who or if she married but my Mam said they looked forward to her visits as she was great fun ![]()
…watching two films at the flicks.
A few days in the South West last week came to a shuddering halt when a rear wheel bearing cried “ENOUGH!” After an unpleasant exchange with RAC, our bike has been returned 6 days later and I have replaced all 3 bearings and both seals. While there, I also serviced the rear caliper and renewed the pads. As a further precaution a new sprockets and chain set have also been added. We are away to the Alps in 3 weeks and as an even further precaution, I have bearings, seals and pads on order for the front wheel, which I will fit before we go. £400 for extended warranty was a waste of our money as wheel bearings are considered to be “consumables”
Glad you got it fettled before you go though TP
Today (another sans license
) saw me climbing Kirkby Fell on the Gamswell farm road on me old push hog… mainly because of the views you get… either of these photos are worth zooming in if you like that kind of thing. Hot n’ sweaty… earned a pint I reckon ![]()
That’s a serious climb is that! More than one pint I reckon ![]()
The second photo is one of my favourite views in our corner of the world
About an eight mile hilly cycle from my hoose but woth every pedal.
Helping the memsahib with a changeover at a holiday cottage today.
I’ve been replacing the old three part clothes line with an improved rig: pulleys, cleats, fairleads - almost reminds me of my old sailing days (I wish).
After my breakfast run, went to see my 92 year old aunt in her care home. My usual Saturday meet up with her.
I have to go as she can’t get her horse racing bets on like she used to as she doesn’t quite get the Bet 365 app’s nuances.
Amazing at 92 and still having a flutter on a Saturday. And the best thing of all, she put £30.00 into her account about 3 years ago and she has £29.72 left….

Today back at work…
Not too much emails (well, I cheated and worked time to time during the first of the 2 weeks off). We already escalade plans for next year. Probably cross Swiss Alps again and go further to Austria.
Getting evacuated from home by the MoD police!
Guy across the way, who I’ve known since junior school was arrested in the village for fire arms offences and they found an “ordnance item” in his house ![]()
He used to be a sound lad but had a breakdown last year and many issues have come to light since. He is absolutely delusional, sad to see.
Rumour in the village is it was a grenade. I heard the guy telling the MoD police as they arrested him that “it’s a fake” ![]()
Awaiting tapes innertubes and tyres so had to do sumthin else:
The skip will be here on Monday. Such fun ![]()
Today I have mostly been organizing for my “rainproof” gear to be sent back to the manufacturers. The chap at the shop was most helpful, and it was a nice ride to go there too…
Replacing 2 blown double glazed units in my oak lounge window. One of the “stick on” bars was rotten so I cut up some spare timber in the garage and made a new one. Staining tomorrow.
Going cross-eyed in front of the computer trying to arrange electrical components on one of my PCB designs, then taking delivery of some of said components. Can’t help thinking I may have gone a bit overboard on my ordering…
That’s 3,000 transistors and 10,000 diodes, which equals an awful lot of soldering over the coming months/years. Actually, the most fiddly bit is going to be bending component leads and inserting them into the PCBs, then keeping them in place whilst soldering them. ![]()
I case you’re interested, (I know you are
) I’m designing a 1960 era computer using (modern) diodes and transistors.
I’m working my way back in time having done a 1980 computer with an 8-bit micro processor and an 1970 machine using TTL logic chips for the CPU. And no, I shalt be going back another decade to 1950 because I don’t have the space or the money for a vacuum tube computer!
